Application deadline is tomorrow, Friday, March 4, 12pm. Baruch College CTL Presents: Open-Source Digital Tools for Teaching March 2022 Seminar Overview The Open-Source Digital Tools for Teaching seminar, hosted by the Baruch Center for Teaching and Learning, offers faculty an opportunity to discover and develop skills with technologies that will build engagement among students and faculty in and out of the classroom space. We’ll discuss the affordances of openly-licensed and accessible digital platforms that diversify opportunities to learn. Faculty who are open to learning new digital tools are welcome to participate in the seminar and are eligible to earn a certificate of completion in one of two possible tracks. Queens COVID Memorial Project

Hi all, I thought some of you might be interested in viewing and/or contributing to this remembrance project that Queens Memory is co-sponsoring, which honors Queens residents who lost their lives to COVID-19. The physical exhibit will be up at the Elmhurst library through the end of this month, but the digital collection will be permanently housed at Queens Public Library and displayed on Urban Archive: Queens COVID Memorial This month, on the two-year anniversary of pandemic shutdowns across New York City, Queens Memory is proud to partner with artist Hannah Ernst and the Queens Covid Remembrance Day Committee to present an exhibition of portraits depicting those we have lost during the pandemic. >From the QC Center for Teaching & Learning: The Pedagogy of Kindness is a pedagogical approach focused on creating an atmosphere of consideration and care for each learner. This discussion series will expand upon previous installments, where educators connected to learn more about building communities of inquiry. In collaboration with the CUNY Innovative Teaching Academy (https://www.cuny.edu/academics/faculty-affairs/cuny-innovative-teaching-aca…) we are expanding on the extremely successful Queens College discussion series of the pedagogy of kindness. This CUNY-wide discussion will delve into the Pedagogy of Kindness (https://hybridpedagogy.org/pedagogy-of-kindness/) and the Universal Design for Learning (https://udlguidelines.cast.org/) aspects of teaching. In this iteration of the discussion series, we cover a greater scope of topics, focusing on facilitating faculty excellence through both Pedagogy of Kindness and Universal Design Learning, such as the origins of the pedagogy of kindness, inclusive teaching through UDL, trauma-informed teaching, etc. Join us as we embark on a journey of care within our diverse CUNY community! >From the Center for Teaching & Learning: The Queens College Psychological Center (QCPC) is offering a six-session group skills-building workshop every other Tuesday from 5:15 to 6:15 pm starting February 22. This workshop is for CUNY faculty. Capacity is limited, so register as soon as you can! ***Register here: https://forms.office.com/r/frES7FhZmL Organizational Skills Training for Adults (OSTA) seeks to teach a variety of empirically supported strategies to help working professionals better manage their daily responsibilities. The group will provide practical training in areas such as time management, planning, decluttering, and workspace optimization. Through instruction in these critical competencies, the group will aim to empower participants to lead more productive and efficient lives. Below is an outline of all six sessions: ***Session 1: Introduction to Organization and Planning (2/22) • Meet and greet. • Discuss motivations for change. • Outline group goals/session structure. • Introduce calendar and task list systems. ***Session 2: Organizational Systems and Managing Multiple Tasks (3/8) • Review calendar/task list assignments. • Provide instruction in prioritization skills (e.g. ABC method). • Problem-solve regarding any anticipated difficulties using these skills. ***Session 3: Managing Overwhelming Tasks and Overcoming Procrastination (3/22) • Review ABC priority practice. • Teach participants how to break a large task down into small, manageable steps. • Teach participants to anticipate the negative consequences of procrastination. • Introduce techniques for trying to resolve procrastination problems. ***Session 4: Focus and Distractions (4/12) • Teach participants to gauge their own attention span. • Teach participants to implement the distractibility delay. ***Session 5: Intro to the Cognitive Model/Adaptive Thinking (4/26) • Review distractibility delay. • Discuss automatic thinking and the relationship of thoughts to behaviors and feelings. • Explain how to identify negative thoughts and formulate a rational response. • Introduce thought records. ***Session 6: Review and Feedback (5/10) • Review participant thought records. • General debriefing/Q&A • Provide additional resources.

Two years after the start of an unprecedented pandemic and resultant transitions nationwide, we are returning to our foundation. The conference theme for 2022 is The State of Accessibility: Are we living up to the promise of compliance and the law? With this theme we hope to reflect topics such as on meeting the promise, falling short, advancements the law did not anticipate, and moving beyond a legal framework of accessibility. It is a Wordpress-based platform that helps people at CUNY connect, learn, teach, and more. Users can create private groups, public sites, or a combination of both. It's a great platform for teaching a class that integrates student writing, creating a public-facing website for an event or program, developing an open educational resource, and building an online portfolio. This workshop, led by CAC Open Educational Technologist Laurie Hurson, is designed to help you get started creating groups and sites and making use of this fantastic tool. Teaching Matters is a monthly, free, one-hour summit of CUNY faculty and staff devoted to sharing innovative teaching strategies and student-centered learning methods. Each gathering includes a focused and engaged peer-to-peer workshop and a few practical teaching tips that can be used in any classroom. **The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL): Applying a Scholarly Lens to Our Instructional Practice ** Join us on Friday, February 4th at 2:00-3:00 PM EST for a workshop on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). The Scholarship of Teaching of Learning (SoTL) “involves faculty undertaking systematic inquiry about student learning – informed by prior scholarship on teaching and learning – and going public with the results”. Faculty, across the disciplines, who engage in SoTL are “assets” because they “generate visible analyses of student learning taking place in their institutions [and] provide excellent models of practice for local colleagues.” Carrying out SoTL is a powerful form of faculty development. In this interactive, one-hour Zoom session led by Dr. Laura Baecher (Professor, Hunter College School of Education) we will learn about how a SoTL agenda is particularly relevant in these times of innovation in our instructional practices, and how SoTL research can be an additional component of our scholarly profile. We will consider forms of SoTL such as Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER) and Signature Pedagogy, and look at publication outlets and types of studies. >From President Frank H. Wu: This Sunday, January 16 at 3 pm, the college community will come together to remember the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We Are Not Satisfied: There is a Long, Long Way to Go In the Footsteps of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is a free virtual event that will celebrate King’s legacy. Trey McLaughlin and The Sounds of Zamar, a choir from Augusta, Georgia, will offer a virtual performance of their adaptations of contemporary gospel, pop, and musical theatre hits. In a video especially made for the occasion, four alumni who attended a speech delivered by King at Queens College—Noel Hankin ’68, Elliot Linzer ’80, then-Student Association President Ronald Pollack ’65, Wayne Price ’66—will share their memories of the event. Mike Wenger '65 will offer his perspective. Student Association President Zaire Couloute will be featured. Invited speakers include top elected officials and Black Student Union Treasurer and Student Senator Jamal Mark. The event is free and open to the public; registration is required. This dedication is epitomized by Queens College student Andrew Goodman who was slain, along with fellow civil rights workers James Chaney and Michael Schwerner, in Mississippi in 1964. The college Clocktower is named in their honor. In 1965, the college welcomed the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as part of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Lecture Series.
