Brightspace update: Demo Student tool

The CUNY Demo Student tool is now available in Brightspace. This tool allows faculty to create a demo student in their site so that they can impersonate a student and submit assignments on their course site. Revisiting Writing in Our Classrooms: How to create student buy-in for writing assignments October 21 12:15-1:30p in the President's Conference Room 1 (RO 527) Students tend to overemphasize the final submission of a writing assignment which results in work that is underdeveloped and ultimately unsatisfying for both them and instructors. But students are likely responding to greater social forces in our product-oriented society and corresponding habits and thought. This workshop will cover how to scaffold writing assignments that create student buy-in from early stages of the assignment through more process-oriented checkpoints that lead up to the final submission. Critical Approaches to Grading October 8, 4-5:30pm, Zoom Facilitated by Jenna Queenan What do we grade, and for what purpose? Grading can be a painful experience - for both students and professors alike. This workshop will explore critical approaches to grading and feedback that can foster student agency, transparency, and engagement in learning, including contract grading and ungrading. In these approaches, grading becomes less top-down and more of a conversation between student and professor, which has the potential to deepen relationships and increase transparency about why we grade. Participants will learn how to develop students’ AI literacy through interactive storytelling, collaborative problem solving, doodling, and notecard exercises. We will also discuss how to teach methods of prompt engineering by designing—and playing—our own choose-your-own-adventure games. In turn, we will consider how game-based learning can foster critical thinking as well as creative, hands-on engagement with AI tools in the classroom. Observing these patterns allows us to gain deeper insights into the world and how we relate to it. This workshop will be an opportunity to critically engage with place-based education that uses the local community and environment as a starting point for learning. We will think about how to encourage our students to observe, analyze, and engage with the world in a way that deepens their understanding. This workshop will introduce instructional practices and interpersonal behaviors for crafting a teaching persona and classroom dynamics that center equity and mitigate systemic learning barriers that adversely impact first-generation, low-income, and racially and ethnically minoritized students. This workshop is for graduate student instructors that would like to use more archival materials in their language classrooms, as well as those who already use a variety of archives/repositories to enhance language pedagogies in the classroom. We will consider the “why” behind our teaching, discuss the role of students’ lived experiences in our work together, and think through how to engage with the world beyond our classrooms. Then, we will imagine how to repurpose existing activities or assignments to engage our students in class projects that authentically address complex social, cultural, economic, and political challenges. This transforms the text into a collaborative learning space for deeper analysis, interpretation, and enrichment. This workshop will introduce participants to two platforms for integrating social annotation into their courses: Manifold and Hypothesis on CUNY Academic Commons. This workshop is hosted by Graduate Center Digital Initiatives. How can an instructor know the assignment will be pertinent to teaching in the CUNY context? At the Assignment Remix event, graduate student instructors will be invited to share an assignment and work collaboratively with peers to “remix” assignments for use within and across disciplines. Attendees will learn how to apply a Creative Commons License to their remixed assignment and submit their assignment to TLC Assignment Library. The goal of the event is to revisit and remix assignments to ensure they enact inclusive learning approaches and openly license these assignments so they can be used by other CUNY instructors. There will be a paid honorarium for Graduate Center students who participate in this event; more information and a Call for Participation will be released in October. UDL & Accessibility I: Centering the “U” in UDL & “I” in EDI November 20, 4:30-6pm, Hybrid (In-Person in Room 3317 and on Zoom) Facilitated by Janelle Poe What is UDL (Universal Design For Learning)? Are UDL & Accessibility the same? Does updated software automatically produce accessible documents? Where does EDI (Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) fit into this framework and our teaching? Part of an ongoing series focused on equitable teaching, this introductory workshop offers an opportunity to learn about the updated Universal Design For Learning 3.0 Guidelines (launched July ‘24) and discuss practical ways to increase EDI and Accessibility in course design, delivery, and our classroom communities. Intended for instructors of all levels, across disciplines, a follow-up workshop diving deeper into these topics will be offered in Spring 2025. Call for applications - CETLL Faculty Fellows: Generative AI in the Classroom [Application due October 11]

Queens College’s CETLL (Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Leadership) invites applications for a Faculty Fellow Program focused on Generative AI in the Classroom. Over the course of the 2024-25 academic year, ~8-10 Faculty Fellows will work together to critically engage the different concerns and opportunities that Generative AI presents for our work as educators. Fellows will also develop resources for their classes that respond to the ways that Generative AI impacts teaching and learning in their fields (e.g., a revised assignment, a syllabus statement, an in-class activity). Faculty Fellows will be invited to share reflections and resources with the campus including through CETLL’s Teaching Showcase in late Spring 2024. This program will host 8-10 Faculty Fellows who will: 1. Attend and participate in three meetings in Fall 2024, to be held on Thursdays from 12:15-1:30p on 10/31, 11/21, and 12/12 (in-person preferred) 2. Attend and participate in three in-person meetings in Spring 2024, dates/times to be determined as a group. 3. Read and discuss material related to Generative AI and teaching and reflect on applications for their own pedagogical goals and commitments. 4. Develop and/or revise materials for use in their classrooms, programs, or departments such as a revised assignment, a syllabus statement, or an in-class activity. 5. Help to plan ways to share resources with QC faculty around these issues. Fellows who fully participate in this program will receive a $1000 stipend after the academic year. Please note that it is not expected nor required that you have any prior experience or specific viewpoints or positions with respect to matters of Generative AI. Dear QC Faculty who teach STEM related classes, The (STEM)2 Network is hosting a Mobile Summer Institute on Scientific Teaching (MoSI) Monday through Thursday, January 13 - 16, 2025 at Hofstra University. All STEM faculty (including psychology, nursing, and health sciences) are welcome to participate in this engaging professional development opportunity. Several QC faculty attended last year and found it valuable. If you have an questions specific to their experience, please reach out to Nathalia Holtzman, the QC (STEM)2 Network contact at nholtzman(a)qc.cuny.edu<mailto:nholtzman@qc.cuny.edu>. MoSIs address teaching and learning challenges unique to colleges and universities. During the MoSI, participants take part in interactive workshops on evidence-based teaching strategies and project-based group work to create effective teaching modules for their classrooms. Participants leave the MoSI with peer-reviewed teaching materials and the skills to: * implement evidence-based teaching in their classrooms, * evaluate themselves and their peers, and * continue developing as reflective practitioners. Attendance during the entire MoSI is required given that each participant works as part of a team. The schedule is Monday from 12:30pm - 4pm and Tuesday to Thursday from 8:30am - 4pm.
