Dear History Students, Not only am I the History Department Chair, but I also study women’s history! Obviously this is a hot topic in the era of women’s marches and #metoo. For next semester, please consider the following course: HIST 308: Women, Gender and Sexuality in Modern Europe. Prof. Irit Bloch, T/Th from 10:45-12:00 This class will explore the history of women, gender, and sexuality in Modern Europe. We will study historical events and developments, such as the Enlightenment, the French Revolution, two world wars, nationalism, industrialization, etc. through the lens of women’s history and we will focus on topics such as reproduction, education, work, sexuality, motherhood and the feminist movement. We will consider how analyzing events through categories such as gender and sexuality shape our understanding of these historical events. Through the reading of primary and secondary sources we will discuss the meaning of historical interpretation and the importance of context. All best, Prof. Celello

New Course for Spring 2019 Europe in the Middle Ages HIST 212-01 Monday/Wednesday. 10:45AM-12:00PM Rathaus 214 Dr. Billado [cid:E187A2C5-FD39-49E3-91AE-5E39ECEBE656] [cid:5C1C04AC-6C23-489D-9BF7-37DA65C454A3] [cid:2E8702DD-332C-41E2-9552-D34C84BA51B5] This course is a survey of European history from the end of the ancient world through the late Middle Ages. We will analyze medieval primary sources (texts, art, and archaeological materials), the writings of modern scholars, as well as later "medievalisms" (i.e., later recycling of the Middle Ages in literature, film, art, architecture) to examine medieval Europe in three different ways: · as formative period to which many aspects of modern western society can trace their origins, including law courts, bureaucratic government, certain types of discrimination and persecution, market economies, and religious institutions; · as a time and place that indeed seems a "foreign country," in which: saints were venerated for licking the wounds of lepers, medicine and magic coexisted, "private" violence was sanctioned by law, human bodies could seem to change from male to female, and priests could have wives; · as an endlessly flexible repository of stories, images, and ideals that later peoples (including in our own culture) have recycled to all sorts of contradictory purposes, in everything from Hollywood entertainment to reenactments at cultural centers, and even to advocating for such disparate ideologies as socialism and fascism.

[History undergraduates] Public History is a Growing Field!

Dear History Students, Do you sometimes wonder what you can do with your degree? There are lots of options, and public history is one of them. If you want to learn more, may I suggest taking HIST 388 with the fabulous Professor Wintermute? Here is the course description: HIST 388: Oral History Methods and Practices Thursday, 3:10 -5:50pm, Powdermaker Hall 157 At what point do family stories become history? What are the boundaries between an official, formal "history" and the personal, individual "past"? These are the types of questions that oral historians bring to the fore as they seek to create new primary sources and craft new secondary interpretations of the past drawn from the eyewitness testimony of the participant. In this workshop-oriented course, students will be introduced to the methods and practice of oral history, from the pre-interview survey, through the actual sit-down interview with a subject, to the creation of a viable primary source that can be used by future researchers. Students will be paired with retired faculty members from the Anthropology, Economics, Sociology, and other departments to create a living record of the subject's experiences in their field and at Queens College.

Dear History Students, In the next few days, I am going to send a few emails to alert you to some of the History Department's exciting course offerings for this Spring. Be sure to enroll now! The first course that I want to highlight is Prof. McDonnell's HIST 286 on "Ancient Roman Law." This course meets on T/Th from 1:40-2:55. This course satisfies both the Ancient History and Legal History concentrations. Not only is Prof. McDonnell a fun and interesting teacher with a distinguished record of scholarship; but Legal History is also a great way to prepare for law school!
