District 9 (2009), written and directed by Neill Blomkamp and produced by Peter Jackson, was inspired by the apartheid era evictions of non-white people from District 6 in Cape Town.  Shot in Soweto in mock documentary format, District 9 is a science fiction thriller with underlying themes of xenophobia, social segregation, and humanity.

Shown as part of the Representations of South Africa film series: http://southafrica.qc.cuny.edu/representations-of-south-africa-film-series/
