Ruby on Rails Coursera course study group

My name is Aryan Jabbari. I work at the Queens College Tech Incubator where we want to create a tech community at Queens College. In an effort to do so, students at the Queens College Tech Incubator take courses outside the scope of the Queens College curriculum, including online courses. Coursera has an online course on a very important web framework: Ruby on Rails. In an effort to learn this important framework, we will have a study group every Thursday starting Thursday, October 1, 2015 in CEP Hall 2 (near the Student Union) based on this class: https://www.coursera.org/learn/ruby-on-rails-intro/home/welcome. Great online course on STEM Teaching

HI all, I wanted to bring to your attention a fantastic FREE online course called “An Introduction to Evidence-Based Undergraduate Teaching.” I took this course last year and it was the best professional development course about teaching methods I have ever taken. They have broken the course I took in half to reduce the workload but as with everything the more time you put in the more you get out of it. While the course is STEM focused most of the content is really about best teaching practices so I would encourage everyone to check it out. Service Learning opportunity

This fall, Queens Memory/Queens Library is collaborating with the college's Office of Service Learning to recruit student volunteers for our Hip Hop Initiative. The project seeks to celebrate and preserve evidence of the impact and rich history of Hip Hop music and culture in the borough of Queens. We still have some spots available for students to conduct oral history interviews, digitize photos and other documents, write blog posts, and organize public programming events on Hip Hop topics. Assistance With Evaluating Fulbright Applications

Dear all, Once again this year, we have a number of students applying for Fulbright awards to do a wide range of very interesting projects. As a sampling to whet your interest, we have students applying to study dance, literature, and childhood in England, to teach English in Thailand, Malaysia and Jordan, and to conduct research in Israel. Each application must include an evaluation by a campus committee composed of faculty and staff who assess things like the feasibility of the student's proposal, his/her ability to carry it out, and the student's ability to serve as a kind of cultural ambassador for the United States. Each evaluation meeting takes about an hour, plus some additional time to read the application before the meeting. Applications consist of students' personal information, three recommendations, language evaluation forms (if required) and two statements (of one to two pages each). The campus evaluation is a form which committees fill out during the evaluation meeting. We would like to begin the evaluations shortly after September 11th, our campus deadline for receipt of all applications, and complete them by early October in order to give students time to make final revisions by Fulbright's October 13th deadline. Committees play an invaluable role in the process of awarding Fulbrights, so I'd very much appreciate your assistance in helping to further our students' success. If you can join us, could you please let me know about your areas of interest so that I can start thinking about how best to match committees and applicants? Thanks very much for your assistance.
