Internship #1 Public Health Leadership & Learning Undergraduate Student Success (PLLUSS) Program Application Deadline: Sunday, January 31, 2016 Program Dates: May 30 - August 12, 2016 Brief Description: The PLLUSS Program is a 10-week public health leadership and research program. The PLLUSS Program is for undergraduate sophomore and junior students minoring or majoring in public health with at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4-point scale. Students must complete sufficient course credit hours during the program for a minor in public health. The PLLUSS program is conducted at three collaborative research sites: (1) Kennedy Krieger Institute (KKI) and Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, (2) University of Cincinnati and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (UC-NIOSH), and (3) California State University-Los Angeles. PLLUSS Program students will participate in public health research, education on health disparities and urban health issues, professional development, and community health promotion activities. Students will be encouraged to produce peer-reviewed publications and attend a national public health meeting. Students will receive mentorship with the goal of successful acceptance and completion of graduate or professional school in the public health area. Following Orientation (May 30, 2016 to June 3, 2016), KKI and UC-NIOSH scholars' research experience will be June 3, 2016 to August 5, 2016. The Center for Teaching & Learning invites you to participate in a workshop for GeoGebra. There are many software programs and internet websites or applets that are used as interactive tools for practicing Mathematics. Some technologies are easy to use but limited in capability, while others possess great capabilities and are difficult to use. GeoGebra, a tool for teaching and learning Math, is an open-source software with amazing capabilities, allowing users to work in several different areas of Mathematics such as Algebra and Geometry (hence the name GeoGebra), Probability, Statistics, and many others. Furthermore, GeoGebra is much more than a software package….it is an entire community built on collaboration! GeoGebra offers its software to non-commercial users for free, and provides users the opportunity to share their work online as web-applets, making dynamic files accessible for use and modification to all. Note: All participants are encouraged to bring a personal laptop computer to the workshop. It is advisable for participants to install GeoGebra software onto their laptops prior to arriving at the workshop. The Center for Teaching and Learning can provide a minimal amount of laptop computers for participants who do not have access to one, and desktop computers will also be available. How does institutional discourse reinforce racial and class discrimination? ***************** Poverty and education are jointly linked and implicated in maintaining disadvantage and underachievement. Policy makers, in their attempt to resolve the situation, inadvertently reinforce the class and race divide if they do not interrogate the larger social structures of capitalist democracies. Rajendra Chetty is a postcolonial scholar engaged with research into race, class, poverty, and social issues in education. His wide areas of research include post-colonial writings, literacy and language, and social issues in education (see http://www.rajendrachetty.com/) He earned his Doctorate in Education at the University of South Africa (1998) in Curriculum Studies and English Education. Greetings, colleagues: Please spread the word among your students and colleagues about the MLA's most recent digital challenge, seeking innovative uses of two of Shakespeare's works. Scroll down for a brief announcement or point your browser to this website for all the details: https://nvs.commons.mla.org/2015/10/14/the-new-variorum-shakespeare-digital… Best, Eva ---------------------- The MLA Committee on the New Variorum Edition of Shakespeare (NVS) is sponsoring its third digital challenge to find the most innovative and compelling uses of the data contained in one of the NVS editions. The MLA is making available the XML files and schema for two volumes, The Winter's Tale and The Comedy of Errors, under a Creative Commons BY-NC 4.0 license. Entries may be in code, but contestants are encouraged to create wireframes that visualize the various uses of the XML files and serve as schemata for programmers. Each entry should provide a visual and written rationale that demonstrates rigorous scholarly and theoretical reflection. The goal is to see the possibilities of the NVS in digital form and, in particular, the innovations in scholarly research, teaching, or acting and directing that opening up the NVS's code might enable. Projects will thus be judged on the quality of the interface they provide for the NVS and on the insights produced by the mash-up. The committee is especially interested in entries that combine the NVS data with another Shakespearean project, such as Folger Digital Texts, Internet Shakespeare Editions, or Open Source Shakespeare. The deadline for entries is 1 August 2016. The committee will assess the submissions and select the winner no later than 15 September 2016. The prize of $500 and an award certificate will be given at the 2017 MLA convention in Philadelphia. ----------------------- Eva M.
