Awards range between $2,500 (plus $500 for supplies) and $5,000 (plus $1,250 for supplies). Undergraduate students from any Queens College major are invited to apply. The deadline to submit proposals is Monday, February 16. POWER in AMERICA IS THE UNITED STATES STILL A DEMOCRACY?² Political Science 222 (81524) Tues/Th 3:10-4:25 PH 121 Professor Michael Krasner Is the United States still a representative democracy--a government that is responsive to the peopleor has it become an oligarchy, a government that is responsive to the few who are rich? Recent trends, including the huge (sometimes secret) campaign contributions (³dark money²) made by wealthy individuals and corporations, the corporate capture of the agencies meant to regulate them, the failure of the federal government to prosecute a single person responsible for the gigantic frauds that produced the Great Recession, the Supreme Court¹s decision to allot First Amendment rights to corporations make this a serious, urgent issue. Likewise, post 9/11 actions of the executive branch of the federal government such as the extra-judicial murder of American citizens, the kidnapping (³rendition²) and torture practiced by the CIA, the CIA¹s spying on the Senate Intelligence Committee, the provision in the Defense Authorization Act that allows the military to detain American citizens indefinitely without charge, all raise the question as to whether the expansion of federal power has fundamentally eroded the civil liberties that distinguish a democracy from an authoritarian state. NEW COURSE!! ³POLITICAL REVOLUTIONS THROUGH FILM² PSCI 209 2 (81529) Weds. 1:40-4:30 Professor Michael Krasner >From Mexico to China, from Russia to France, from India to South Africa, from the American Revolution to the Arab Spring, revolutions have shaped the world in which we live. This course will use films such as ³Potemkin,² ³Burn!,² ³Z,² ³The Battle of Algiers,² ³Triumph of the Will,² and ³Madison² to explore the causes of revolution and the forces that shape them, including the reasons why a social crisis sometimes produces a revolution of the right and sometimes a revolution of the left. The course will also consider the results of revolutionwhether and why they achieve their goals or not. Teaching in Vietnam Internship - Application Open till Dec. 28

Dear colleagues, The application to Teach English in Vietnam is currently open and will remain open till December 28th. Please share this exciting opportunity with undergraduate and graduate students to travel to Vietnam in July 2015 and teach English: Selected students will travel to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and spend the month of July 2015 co-teaching 16-20 hours a week in the Summer Fun program hosted by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education (SEAMEO). Interns will create lessons in English and participate in extracurricular activities for students ages 6-15. This is a great opportunity particularly for Education & TESOL majors but it is open to undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines. Room and board is included plus a small daily stipend. There will most likely be a partial subsidy for round-trip air travel from NYC to Vietnam. The deadline for QC students to apply to the internship is December 28, 2013. Film scholars Noah Tsika (Media Studies, QC) and Paula Massood (Brooklyn College) will discuss South Africa’s cinematic tradition from the 1950s to the present. Please also announce it to your students - it should be a fascinating lecture! *Starring South Africa: Apartheid and Its Aftermath on the Silver Screen* *Paula Massood* (Brooklyn College) & *Noah Tsika *(Queens College) *Thursday December 11* *4:45pm* *Godwin-Ternbach Museum (405 Klapper Hall)* >From the artistic prohibitions of apartheid to the country’s current role as one of the world’s leading producers of popular media, South Africa has witnessed a range of cinematic practices over the past century. In this presentation, Professor Paula Massood of Brooklyn College and Professor Noah Tsika of Queens College will provide an overview of South African film from the 1950s to the present. With particular attention to the creative contributions of such stars as Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela, Professors Massood and Tsika will examine aspects of South Africa’s cinematic imaginary as it has developed against considerable odds.
