Hello all. I thought I'd add a bit of information to Provost Fernandez's announcement of this scholarship. One of our students won this award last year, and found it to be a very positive experience. In addition to the scholarship, she appreciated the chance to network with others and some mentoring opportunities. I'd be happy to work with students on their essays. The scholarship winners will be presented at the NPRDP's Educational Leadership Banquet on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at Villa Barone Manor in the Bronx. The National Puerto Rican Day Parade was established to create national awareness of Puerto Rican contributions. NPRDP's mission is to empower the Puerto Rican community through promoting culture, education, scholarships, and civic engagement. To this end a Scholarship Awards Program was established. NPRDP will award thirty (30) $2,000 scholarships to exceptional Puerto Rican youth who are making a difference in their community. To be eligible: · Applicant must be of Puerto Rican descent · Applicants must have a minimum Grade Point Average (G.P.A.) of 3.0 or better. · Applicants must undergo an interview with the Selection Committee. · College/ University applicants must be between the ages of 17 and 25. · Applicants in High School must be in their senior year. · Applicants in college must be in an accredited four year institution. (Freshmen, Sophomore or Junior) A completed application package must include an application form, essay, a written bio, volunteer community service statement, two letters of recommendation of which one letter of recommendation must be from the site where the student performs his/her volunteer work, academic transcripts and head shot photo. Letters of recommendation should be requested from teachers, professors, counselors, mentors, clergy, community leaders, etc. The letters should highlight the applicant's volunteer community service, length of the relationship with the candidate, and the specific contributions the applicant has made to the community. Letters of recommendation and sealed transcripts should be mailed together to National Puerto Rican Day Parade, P.O Box 975, New York, NY 10272 by Friday March 6, 2015, (Application, letter of recommendation and official transcripts received after this date will be disqualified). Applicants selected for an interview will be notified by email. Interviews will take place the week of March 9, 2015 or March 16, 2015. Recipients of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade Scholarship will be disqualified should any of the following conditions occur: (1) recipient provides false information on application; (2) recipient is not enrolled in an accredited college or university; (3) recipient is not of Puerto Rican descent; (4) recipient is a family member or is affiliated with a NPRDP board member. Full disclosure of said relationship must be made and your application will go through an additional review process; (5) applicant fails to provide high school/college transcripts, two letters of recommendation, essay, written bio, and head shot photo. Fellowship for Summer Study in the UK

Dear all, I'm writing to ask you to encourage your students to consider applying for one of the nine special Summer Institutes being offered by the US-UK Fulbright Commission. These Institutes provide the opportunity for freshmen and sophomores to explore the UK on a three to six week academic and cultural program. Students may choose from many topics, including British children's literature, archaeology, business and preventative medicine, among others. Almost all costs for this prestigious fellowship are covered, so it's a wonderful opportunity for talented students who might prefer a shorter overseas experience to begin to establish a record of external funding. Some students have been emailed about this, and I've written a blog post which is available at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/eportfolios/qcfellowships/2015/01/22/summer-abroad… Depending on the program, applications are due either February 26th or March 5th. I will host an information session on Wednesday, February 4th in Rm. 17 during free hour, from 12:15pm-1:30pm. Visiting South African artists and campus wide talk

For two weeks this semester (February 3-February 13), South African theatre artists Amy Jephta and her husband Sanjin Muftic will visit campus. During this time they will work with students and faculty, conducting workshops and discussing South African theatre practices. All of this work will culminate in a public presentation on February 11 in the Little Theatre, King Hall 115 during free hour. Apologies if you have already received this announcement through another means, but I wanted to let you know about the Year of South Africa Short Course schedule that is taking shape for this semester: http://southafrica.qc.cuny.edu/south-africa-short-course Please note that our first lecture will be this week, *Wednesday Feb. 4*, and will focus on the history, politics, and epidemiology of HIV/AIDS in South Africa. We are bringing in two excellent visiting scholars that work in this area, Dr. Ida Susser from Hunter College and Dr. Mark Lurie from Brown University, and the discussion will be moderated by our own Dr. Holly Reed (Sociology). *Apartheid and HIV in South Africa: How a century of policies left the new democratic South Africa vulnerable to HIV* Wednesday, Feb. 4 12:15 pm Godwin-Ternbach Museum Klapper Hall 405 The first Spring 2015 lecture in our Short Course on South Africa will feature Professor Mark Lurie (Brown University) and Professor Ida Susser (Hunter College-CUNY), who will discuss historical, social, political, and epidemiological dimensions of HIV in South Africa. Professor Lurie will focus on the role of industrial development, apartheid, and patterns of migration in creating social conditions conducive to the spread of HIV. Professor Susser will discuss the history of protest that led to effective treatment and preventions options for South Africans living with HIV. The QC MAPS organization will be hosting a Pre-Medical mixer on Tuesday February 10, 2015 from 6:30-9pm. There will be a panel of medical students from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, NYU School of Medicine and Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of medicine to answer any questions that students may have. It'll be an excellent opportunity to get pointers from medical students on how they can make themselves a competitive applicant and to learn more about life as a medical school student. Students sometimes bring up difficult issues in class, and with the after effects of the battle between Israel and Hamas and the shootings of Black men in Ferguson, Staten Island, and other parts of the United States, honing your skills in facilitating constructive conversations in the classroom is more important than ever. Join Sophia McGee and John Vogelsang, from QC’s Center for Ethnic, Racial, & Religious Understanding (CERRU) for a four-session workshop series designed to help you develop and augment your skills in facilitating constructive conversations. The workshop series is open to all Queens College faculty (full- and part-time).
