Dear Colleagues,
AJ has asked if this could possibly be included as an agenda item for the faculty meeting next week.
I've copied an excerpt that essentially summarizes the issue (more details are provided in the thread below). AJ wondered if as a department we could in some way adapt the MLA approach to be consistent with APA Style. This issue is likely to become more common as e-readers proliferate, and it would be helpful if we could develop a consistent approach to dealing with it as a department.

Some of the books may not have the page numbers on neither the Kindle hardware (your actual e-reader) nor on the Kindle for PC. If purchased through Amazon, most of the time, you'll have page numbers. In the sad event that you do not have page numbers there are methods of citations. NISO is working on a standard for the exchange of annotations among reading systems, both among reading devices and web platforms. The project was just approved by the NISO members and we will be convening a working group soon.

You're welcome Phyllis. I must say, I'm still rusty and a bit unclear, and definitely feel too premature to direct a patron. I may have to cave in and purchase a kindle this year, if for no other reason, than to offer proper direction. Perhaps they should offer librarian and educator discounts!

At the public library, we've received lots of request for tutorials in e-readers and downloadable media. However, I'm pretty sure the question for how to cite will come up since essentially, these texts read without page numbers. It may be worth it to create lib-guides or how-tos on our citation pages for folks migrating to e-readers. I have a feeling people are going to ask us about citation in Kindles and other e-readers. A instructor friend of mine sent this to me, and so I thought I'd share.

If in fact you're still against this method, there are formulas that are floating around the internet where you insert the book pages in total then the amount of locations in the e-book version and something usable comes out. Though, I highly doubt we're gonna have to do that since we're English majors who fear the word math--at least I do. I hope this helped you a bit and if you have any other questions please ask away.
