Re: Gslisadjuncts gslisfac Proposal for joint degree with history department
Dear bb, I sent it out directly after (apologies for omitting) but will attach again. Also the original proposal (MAMLSProposal 4 dept.docx) I'm not sure whether the Draft minutes from the February 6 Jt. Meeting of the Assessment and Curriculum committees at which these issues were discussed was sent out to the full faculty (we have had a whole slew of meetings and quite frankly keeping up with all the minutes has been confusing), but I attach here. (I believe that we have a final approved version but in the interest of moving this forward will not look for it now). In brief, the relevant portions relating to below are as follows: a. Prof. Allen proposed increasing the total number of hours from 42 to 54 credit hours for the joint program in order to address concerns that those seeking jobs as librarians would have sufficient GSLIS coursework to adequately prepare them for the workplace. This would result in 8 courses from each department, plus thesis/research credits. b. The group agreed that History 791 plus a thesis course, OR LBSCI 709 could suffice for meeting the research requirements of the joint degree, but not both. Also: a. Courses within history of potential interest to GSLIS students include one in Oral History and in History of the Book But you are correct, there was a suggestion that (I think) LBSCI 732 be cross-listed. This was not included in the Jt. Comm. minutes but perhaps should be in the corrected minutes. Do you think we need that degree of detail in the proposal? Also, copying the Adjunct List on this thread; my apologies for this oversight initially. Sorry to confuse with all the attachments, but here goes. If this does not go through with all attachments I will send separately. cp On Mar 18, 2014, at 10:30 PM, Roberta Brody wrote:
Can you please send the latest version of the proposal?
At the meeting which I attended a few weeks ago with GSLIS faculty and History faculty, I do not recall that there was an increase in LIS or in total number of credits, but rather a notion that LBSCI 732 [or perhaps a different course] could be cross-listed as both LIS and History. This would enable the program to maintain the total number of overall credits and the number of credits in history as specified and still allow students who wished to do so to earn a certificate in Archives and the Preservation of Cultural Materials within that overall total.
Has this idea been included or some other arrangement made?

We neglected to take a vote on this proposal at our recent faculty meeting, so we need to take an electronic vote in order to move this forward. It already has been approved by the Curriculum Committee. An Ad Hoc group of a number of departmental faculty have held a series of meetings with representatives of the History Dept., along with Dean Bodnar who strongly supports the initiative. These meetings resulted in an increase in the number of course credits in order to permit students wishing to complete the certificate in Archives and Preservation to be able to fulfill these requirements while also meeting the joint degree requirements, and some courses will be cross-listed in both departments in order to maximize flexibility.
Joel Allen, Chair of the History Dept. is in charge of moving this forward and would to proceed as soon as possible.
Please bring any questions you might have to the attention of GSLISFAC, and hopefully one of those of us who attended the meetings can address any concerns, if I am unable to do so. We also have a Curriculum meeting scheduled for Thursday, March 20, at 1:30 (or as soon as the Admission Committee finishes, so possibly at 1:00. If there are concerns these also can be addressed at that time. Minutes and agenda for the Curr. comm are forthcoming.
Deborah and Jackie--we sincerely regret omitting you from the distribution list for our last Curr. meeting, but will share with you the minutes and hope one of you can join us this coming Thursday!
If there are no questions, I request that you vote in support of this measure no later than Thursday at 2:30.
If I don't hear from you by Friday, March 21 at noon, I will assume that you support the initiative.
Many thanks to all,
Claudia Perry Curriculum Comm Co-Chair
