Opportunity for Faculty to Work with Students on Service-Oriented Projects

The CUNY Service Corps is excited to expand its service placement portfolio in 2014-2015 by inviting faculty to lead service projects.  The faculty-led project application is now available online via our program website (www.cuny.edu/servicecorps <http://www.cuny.edu/servicecorps>), and the application deadline is Friday, April 4, 2014.

Background
In the program¹s 2013-2014 pilot year, approximately 700 Service Corps members (100 from Queens College) have been placed with 96 nonprofit organizations and government agencies across the five boroughs of New York City.  Community partners include schools (K-12) and after-school programs, arts organizations and museums, criminal justice/prisoner re-entry organizations, CUNY research centers and specialized programs, economic empowerment organizations, environmental organizations, and public health organizations.

Opportunity for Faculty
Faculty from all CUNY colleges are invited to apply to lead projects that involve Service Corps members (students in the Service Corps program).  We are particularly interested in service-oriented projects that fall within our program¹s four thematic areas:
·       Education
·       Health
·       Sustainability
·       Economic Development


Benefits to Faculty and other Highlights
·       Faculty-Directed Service-Oriented Projects will consist of a minimum of three students.
·       The hiring, training, payroll processing, and on-going support of students will be administered and coordinated by CUNY Service Corps staff, the Research Foundation CUNY, and campus offices.
·       Students are paid $12.00 per hour for their work through the program (no cost to faculty!)
·       Students work for 12 hours per week for a total of 24 weeks in the fall and spring semesters (2014-2015).
·       Students are selected through a rigorous application and interview process by CUNY faculty and staff.
·       Priority will be given to projects that will enable students in the Service Corps to obtain academic credit for their work, either throughconnection to an existing course, an independent study, or some other arrangement.


Service Corps members are students enrolled at one of eight participating colleges (BMCC, CSI, John Jay, KBCC, Lehman, Medgar Evers, City Tech, and Queens), but students are expected to commute to the faculty member's home college for project-related work.
