Dear all, I am hosting two information sessions next week on scholarships that offer generous funding for graduate study, and would appreciate your spreading the word to your students. They have been informed by college emails and the information sessions will appear in the next This Week at QC, but faculty recommendations carry a lot of weight with students. The Soros scholarship is for new Americans, and we will discuss that one on Monday during Free Hour. Truman, which we will discuss during Wednesday's free hour, funds students interested in careers in public service. Free Oral History Training Workshop!

Hello all, Queens Memory invites all those interested to our upcoming free oral history training workshop! This session will take place on Wednesday, October 24, from 6 to 8 pm at Queens Central Library in Jamaica. You will learn how to prepare for an interview, ask good questions, make a high-quality recording, and how to submit your completed interview to the library. The evening will also feature a discussion of several current and upcoming Queens Memory projects. Digital Literacy/OER Faculty Fellowship: Call for Participants

The Queens College Library and the Center for Teaching and Learning are pleased to invite applications to the Digital Literacy Faculty Fellowship, a competitive fellowship focused on pedagogical praxis that carries a $3,000 stipend. Queens College recognizes that a major barrier to the use of open educational resources (OER) and other tools of open pedagogy is the challenge of teaching, reading, thinking and communicating in the digital environment. Therefore, we are introducing this fellowship program, funded by this year’s OLS OER grant, to support digital literacy through open educational resources. Faculty chosen to participate in this competitive fellowship program are eligible to receive $3,000 in compensation.* Faculty fellows commit to: o Actively participating in a semester-long seminar on digital scholarship and open pedagogy, including eight in-person workshops or discussion groups; o Working with library faculty and OER experts to develop courses and materials that adhere to accepted review standards; o Teaching at least one zero-textbook-cost course incorporating digital literacy materials by fall 2019; o Writing a brief end-of-program narrative; o Making course materials openly available through a Queens College digital repository. * Subject to workload restrictions. Hello: The Tech Incubator at Queens College is happy to bring you the following talk by Keith Furst, Queens College alum, Managing Director of Data Derivatives, a consulting firm focused on implementing, validating, and fine-tuning financial crime systems. Keith is a co-author of a new book "AI Supremacy". AI Supremacy: Winning in the Era of Machine Learning Overview of Talk Artificial Intelligence (AI) is impacting nearly every facet of human life from globalization to jobs, financial services to the role of governments, the nexus with cyber risk to spying, and from China's quest for AI supremacy to healthcare. The race for AI supremacy is about more than establishing a competitive position in the global marketplace for innovative applications and technological prowess - it is about anticipation, adopting the right mind set, and having the right resources, a futuristic orientation, and the ability to execute. While few organizations and governments have achieved the right mix to lead in the race for AI supremacy, those that have already possess a substantial lead. Those that have not are simply falling further and further behind. Can those that are not already in the race, get in the race with any realistic hope of catching up? Call for Presentations: Teaching & Learning Showcase, November 2, 2018

>From the Center for Teaching & Learning Celebrate fall and excellence in teaching at Queens College by sharing your practice at the Center for Teaching & Learning's fifth annual teaching and learning showcase on Friday, November 2 from 10 am to 3 pm. The event will include presentations from faculty and students on engaging teaching practices and learning experiences. Consider presenting any teaching practice you have found to be effective and engaging. We encourage you to include your students in your presentation. Presentations will be 20 minutes each, including Q&A time. In the afternoon, we will showcase the Quantitative Reasoning Across the Curriculum project from the past four years. We encourage the QR Fellows to submit proposals for presentation. Please send us a 100-150 word description of your practice or your students' experience of it, and why you think it's effective. Evening Faculty Workshop, October 10 - Discussion Boards: Engaging your students beyond the classroom.

This fall, the Center for Teaching & Learning launches Evening Faculty Workshops: Digital Tools for Effective Teaching. These workshops will help you identify specific pedagogical goals for your course(s) and explore digital tools to support them. The first workshop, Discussion Boards: Engaging your students beyond the classroom, will take place on Wednesday, October 10. At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to set up and effectively moderate a discussion forum in Blackboard. Date: Wednesday, October 10, 2018 Time: 5pm-7pm Location: Rosenthal Library, Room 101A This computer lab has only Windows desktops, but you are welcome to bring your own laptops.
