Home Movie Day this Saturday!

Hello all, Do you have a canister of 8mm film in your closet that you've always wanted to watch, but have no way of projecting? Do you have family home movies you're trying to keep safe for future generations? Then join Queens Memory this Saturday (October 19) for Home Movie Day 2019 -- the only New York City site for this national event! Along with our co-hosts -- NYU's Moving Image and Archiving and Preservation Program, the NYU Student Chapter of the Association of Moving Image Archivists, and the XFR Collective -- we will screen movies and provide advice from film preservation experts. This free event will include Home Movie Bingo and other fun interactions with these rare and entertaining treasures on film. Film, optical media and videotape welcome! Home Movie Day will be held at the Long Island City branch of Queens Public Library at 37-44 21st Street, LIC, from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. Technology Exploration Talk Series The Tech Incubator and Computer Science Department are jointly offering a "Technology Exploration Talk Series" in the Fall semester. The following are the two scheduled talks in October and November.. Topic: Technology and Healthcare Industry Date: Wednesday, October 16 Time: 12:00pm to 1:30pm Location: Science Building, SB C203 Speaker: Keith Furst, Managing Director, Financial Crimes Technology, Co-author of new book AI Supremacy Description: There are a number of critical healthcare challenges we face as a species such as access to clean water, antibiotic resistant bacteria, genetic diseases, and aging populations. Healthcare is one of the hottest spaces in artificial intelligence (AI) today in terms of number of closed deals and dollars invested. The human body is incredibly complex and information rich and AI is helping sift through these massive data sets to create real solutions to address unusual diseases, detect health issues earlier and improve overall quality of life. This talk will review some of the current AI trends in the healthcare industry and where it could be going in the future. An Introduction to Open Educational Resources, October 17

>From the Center for Teaching & Learning and Queens College Libraries Open Educational Resources (OER) are free and freely accessible digital media (including text, images, video, learning modules and etc.) that are used in teaching and learning. Due to their digital distribution, they can be accessed anywhere and anytime by students through an internet connection. OER are easy to keep up to date and modify for a variety of course-related applications while supplanting expensive materials students normally have to purchase. On Thursday, October 17, the Center for Teaching & Learning and Queens College Libraries will kick off a three-part series on OER with an introduction to the topic and a discussion of how to get started using them in courses. Teaching Tip: Getting Started with a Qwriting Course Site

Some of you might not know that Qwriting is available to all members of the Queens College community (faculty, students and staff) who may create as many sites as they want and for any purpose that does not violate Queens College and/or CUNY Policies. In this tip, we will focus on getting you started creating your own Qwriting Course Site. But first, why would you want to in the first place? Let’s take a deeper look! Qwriting is a website creation platform that uses WordPress (https://wordpress.org/) as its underlying framework. It contains the tools for creating and publishing many different kinds of websites for a variety of purposes including course-related sites, departmental websites, personal journals for students and faculty, research sharing and collaboration… the list goes on and on. Some great reasons for using Qwriting sites in your courses include both individual work such as writing practice, sharing thoughts and readings, and group work such as collaborating on research, idea gathering and generating discussion. Call for Presentations: Teaching & Learning Showcase, October 18, 2019

Celebrate fall and excellence in teaching at Queens College by sharing your practice at the Center for Teaching & Learning’s sixth annual teaching and learning showcase on Friday, October 18, 2019 from 10am to 3pm. The event will include presentations from faculty and students, on how QC faculty are utilizing engaging teaching practices and learning experiences. Consider presenting any teaching practice you have found to be effective and engaging. For those of you that participated in CTL workshops this past year, we would love to see a summary of how you are utilizing what you learned in your teaching. If you gave a presentation for the workshop you participated in, please consider giving the presentation to the wider campus audience. We encourage you to include your students in your presentation. This year we will host two types of presentations: Long format 20 minutes talks and rapid-fire talks of 5 minutes or less, including Q&A time. Rapid-fire talks are a chance to highlight a small and valuable teaching tip or practice you think others might find useful. Please send us a 100-150 word description of your practice or your students’ experience of it, and why you think it’s effective. The deadline for submission is Tuesday, October 1.
