>From the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Leadership (CETLL): With the end of the semester approaching, CETLL has prepared a checklist of tasks that should be completed in the next couple of weeks, including resolving incomplete grades, reserving course materials for fall, and submitting grades. CETLL would like to remind faculty that Queens College courses being conducted through Blackboard will be conducted through Brightspace starting in Summer 2024. We will no longer use Blackboard. The checklist has important information about transitioning to Brightspace, including how to back up your Blackboard courses to Brightspace. Community Engaged Learning Faculty Workshops: Fall 2024-Spring 2025

Community Engaged Learning Fall 2024-Spring 2025 Faculty Workshops In collaboration with the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Leadership (CETLL), Dr. Leslee Grey (Secondary Education and Youth Services) and Cristina Di Meo (Experiential Education) will facilitate 3 workshops in Fall 2024 to help guide up to 5 faculty in creating and integrating a Community Engaged Learning (CEL) project into an existing course. CEL is defined as an educational approach that integrates academic learning with community-based experiences to foster active citizenship, social responsibility, and civic engagement. Workshops will include support with course design, incorporating structured reflection, assessment, and developing community partnerships. Faculty will then teach their revised course in Spring 2025. Faculty in all disciplines are invited and welcome. For many of our students, the cost of textbooks can be a steep barrier to academic success. Students often choose not to register for courses that require expensive textbooks, or fail courses simply because they cannot afford the materials. These patterns can lead to increased enrollment time and reduced rates of degree completion. You can help! Queens College faculty have saved our students over $2 million in textbook fees since 2018 by using Open Educational Resources, or OER. Learn more about OER<https://qc-cuny.libguides.com/oer-ztc>. This summer, the Queens College Library is pleased to offer an accelerated OER Fellowship Program. Through this program, held over four days in June, OER Fellows learn the fundamental principles of OER and open pedagogy, develop technical skills to create and curate accessible course content, organize cohesive and coherent materials tied to overarching learning objectives, and apply rigorous assessment standards to identify existing resources for classroom use. Faculty Fellows receive $2,000 in compensation. Faculty Fellows commit to: * Participate in four 90-minute remote workshops June 3-6 * Develop a zero-textbook-cost course * Teach at least one section of the OER or ZTC course in the following academic year * Submit openly licensed course materials to one of our institutional repositories by August 27 * Write a brief (200-500 word) end-of-fellowship narrative Through the Fellowship program, faculty learn to: * Define and distinguish between open educational resources and zero textbook cost materials * Find and evaluate existing open educational resources * Assemble organized and easily modified syllabi * Navigate intellectual property, fair use, copyright, and Creative Commons licenses * Create accessible resources * Explore the principles and practice of open pedagogy * Enact social justice by reducing economic barriers to student success Faculty Fellows make the resources they create openly available for other faculty to adopt, and we are happy to be able to offer modest funding to each faculty member the first time they teach a ZTC section of a course using a Fellow's materials. On behalf of Natanya Duncan, PhD, Director QC Africana Studies Good Day! The QC Spring Sit N Write Works in Progress will take place on April 17, 2024, at 12:15 in PH333 and via Zoom. Robert Nyamushosho of QC Anthropology will be joined in discussion by Dr. Jeffery Fleisher Department Chair and Professor of Anthropology at Rice University. Their dialogue will focus on Nyamushosho's "Chumnungwa glass beads: New insights into the geochemistry, circulation, and consumption patterns of pre-European glass beads in Iron Age southern Africa, CE 980 – 1650". Abstract: Glass beads in southern Africa's archaeological record, circa mid-first millennium CE, mark early links between the region, East African coast, and the Indian Ocean rim. Key research focused on glass beads, particularly from notable southern African polities, like the renowned Mapungubwe and Great Zimbabwe sites, has laid the groundwork for a regional taxonomic series of these beads, emphasizing their role as indicators of wealth and social status. New findings from Chumnungwa, a lesser-known Zimbabwe culture site, reveal five glass bead series. Analysis, using non-invasive techniques like Laser Ablation-ICP-MS, identifies compositions (v-Na-Al and m-Na-Al) widely circulated in Asia and Africa from the 10th to 17th centuries. Chumnungwa stands out as the first Zimbabwe culture site with m-Na-Al 6 beads. The study highlights challenges in typological categorization without scientific methods, offering insights into bead consumption and sociality in Iron Age southern Africa.
