The Office of the Provost and the Center for Teaching & Learning invite Queens College faculty to contribute to our Teaching Circle blog, http://teachingcircle.qwriting.qc.cuny.edu. The blog aims to provide a virtual space where faculty can share news, thoughts, and concerns on scholarship and pedagogy. If you are faculty at Queens and are interested in blogging about your teaching experience at the college, please fill out this form at http://bit.ly/TeachingCircle15_call. Previous blogging experience is not required. The project runs from March 2015 to February 2016 and participants are asked to write a self-introduction piece plus a total of eight blog posts. An iPad Mini will be distributed to participants who contribute at least eight posts. Please apply to participate by February 27, 2015. Dear Colleagues, I am pleased to inform you of an important opportunity you will be offered to participate in a survey of faculty job satisfaction. This survey research is part of a national program called the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE), which has been operating from the Harvard Graduate School of Education since 2003. Participation will entail completing a 25-minute, web-based survey; your unique link to the survey should have been emailed to you from COACHE recently, or in the next few days. COACHE will not use any name or email address for any purposes except for this research. While there are many surveys that faculty are asked to complete, this one was designed entirely to determine your current job satisfaction compared to faculty at peer institutions. Your views are especially important to us as we strive to attract and retain the best and brightest scholars and teachers, increase the satisfaction of all faculty, and to make Queens College a great place to work. In a process approved by Harvard's and CUNY's institutional review board, COACHE will provide our campus with their summary analysis, as well as the confidential unit-record database, stripped of names and e-mail addresses. The data provided to Queens College will be received and kept on a secure server by Margaret McAuliffe, Director of Institutional Research. Neither I, nor any other administrator, staff or faculty member outside Institutional Research at Queens College will have access to the unit-record data. IR will explore and analyze broad patterns in the data to assist with planning and developing improved academic policies and practices across campus. To protect confidentiality and guarantee that the results of this survey cannot influence personnel decisions about individual faculty members, IR staff will disseminate survey results only with data aggregated in cells of five respondents or more, so that individual faculty and individual departments cannot be identified. We welcome this opportunity to learn from an independent, research-driven, comparative study. We believe that Queens College has the potential to be one of the best places for scholars to work, and with your help we can learn how best to support that goal. Reminder: Facilitating Constructive Conversations in the Classroom

Students sometimes bring up difficult issues in class, and with the after effects of the battle between Israel and Hamas and the police violence against Black men in Ferguson, Staten Island, and other parts of the United States, honing your skills in facilitating constructive conversations in the classroom is more important than ever. Join Sophia McGee and John Vogelsang, from QC’s Center for Ethnic, Racial, & Religious Understanding (CERRU) for a four-session workshop series designed to help you develop and augment your skills in facilitating constructive conversations. The workshop series is open to all Queens College faculty (full- and part-time). Sessions will take place in Queens Hall 325, on February 26, March 19, March 26, and April 16. There are three spots left in the CERRU workshop “Facilitating Constructive Conversations in the Classroom.” We will be accepting participants until the end of this week. Dear faculty, staff, and students, Please join us on February 19th for this exciting Year of South Africa event featuring Dr. Prins Nevhutalu, the Vice Chancellor of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, in Cape Town, South Africa. He will tell us about his experiences in higher education there since 1994, as he and his colleagues navigated the changes and challenges in education and society that arose after the end of apartheid. It should be an important and thought-provoking talk. Before the lecture, the Queens College Women's Choir, conducted by Dr. Sandra Babb and H. The scholarship winners will be presented at the NPRDP's Educational Leadership Banquet on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at Villa Barone Manor in the Bronx. The National Puerto Rican Day Parade was established to create national awareness of Puerto Rican contributions. NPRDP's mission is to empower the Puerto Rican community through promoting culture, education, scholarships, and civic engagement. To this end a Scholarship Awards Program was established. NPRDP will award thirty (30) $2,000 scholarships to exceptional Puerto Rican youth who are making a difference in their community. To be eligible: · Applicant must be of Puerto Rican descent · Applicants must have a minimum Grade Point Average (G.P.A.) of 3.0 or better. · Applicants must undergo an interview with the Selection Committee. · College/ University applicants must be between the ages of 17 and 25. · Applicants in High School must be in their senior year. · Applicants in college must be in an accredited four year institution. (Freshmen, Sophomore or Junior) A completed application package must include an application form, essay, a written bio, volunteer community service statement, two letters of recommendation of which one letter of recommendation must be from the site where the student performs his/her volunteer work, academic transcripts and head shot photo. Letters of recommendation should be requested from teachers, professors, counselors, mentors, clergy, community leaders, etc. The letters should highlight the applicant's volunteer community service, length of the relationship with the candidate, and the specific contributions the applicant has made to the community. Fellowship for Summer Study in the UK

Dear all, I'm writing to ask you to encourage your students to consider applying for one of the nine special Summer Institutes being offered by the US-UK Fulbright Commission. These Institutes provide the opportunity for freshmen and sophomores to explore the UK on a three to six week academic and cultural program. Students may choose from many topics, including British children's literature, archaeology, business and preventative medicine, among others. Almost all costs for this prestigious fellowship are covered, so it's a wonderful opportunity for talented students who might prefer a shorter overseas experience to begin to establish a record of external funding. Some students have been emailed about this, and I've written a blog post which is available at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/eportfolios/qcfellowships/2015/01/22/summer-abroad… Depending on the program, applications are due either February 26th or March 5th. I will host an information session on Wednesday, February 4th in Rm. 17 during free hour, from 12:15pm-1:30pm.
