Readers Needed to Review Scholarship Applications

Dear all, Once again, Queens College is a partner institution with the Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF). This means that our students are eligible to receive generous funding and to participate in mentoring and other professional development activities through APIASF. APIASF relies on volunteer readers, so I'm writing to invite you to take part in reviewing applications for the APIASF Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI) Scholarship Program. Applications can be reviewed completely online and at your own pace. The APIASF AANAPISI Scholarship Program is a collaboration with AANAPISIs and the communities they serve to provide scholarships, expand institutional capacity and mobilize local resources to help foster economic development. How can you help? volunteers are needed between October 16, 2015 and November 16, 2015. Readers will have access to a secure website to review scholarship applications. To ensure that there are enough readers to evaluate all applications, readers are asked to commit to reading a minimum of 20 applications. Each application takes approximately 10-15 minutes to review. All volunteers, new & returning, are required to review a training document (PDF). The training covers basic information related to education in the Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities and provides an overview of the review and scoring process. All readers must have an undergraduate college diploma and/or 7-10 years of work experience. Readers do not need to be of AAPI ethnicity. Entrepreneurship is a skill that everyone needs to relearn to thrive in the 21st century economy. With the average person now having more than five career and job changes in their work life it is necessary to understand how businesses are created and how to build an economic life that is rewarding. The best way to learn business is by doing it therefore in our talk we will discuss where do entrepreneurial business concepts come from and how do entrepreneurs structure and articulate those ideas concisely to test whether they may have a receptive market. Come learn more about entrepreneuship from an established and proven entrepreneur, Ray Garcia. Ray Garcia is the managing director of Buoyant Capital, a global peer advisory think tank addressing the growth challenges of small to medium sized enterprises. Ray has over 20 years of experience as a technology entrepreneur, as company CTO co-founder, for four venture-backed companies. Earlier in his career, he worked as an executive for major banks including, Citicorp, Republic National Bank (now HSBC), Bank of America, and as a technology consultant to several large US multi-national corporations. The Queens College Tech Incubator will be hosting the second week of their Ruby on Rails study group. The study group will be held during Wednesday free hour (12:15pm to 1:40pm) in CEP Hall 2. It is marked C2 on the Queens College campus map: http://www.qc.cuny.edu/about/directions/2d/Pages/default.aspx. Students can RSVP here: https://www.facebook.com/events/918414384906055/. The study group will be based on the following course, week 2: https://www.coursera.org/specializations/ruby-on-rails. The course is FREE to audit so please be sure to choose the free option. There will be a project to be done at the end of the series of courses to show off your new skills! Please come to the study group having completed week 1 (computer environment setup). Please watch the lectures PRIOR to the study group. Additionally, please bring your own laptops as we do not supply computers. Be ready for questions with questions for your peers to answer and, most of all, HAVE FUN learning! This class is geared towards students with some programming experience.
