Bernstein’s Mass: A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players and Dancers comes to QC The Aaron Copland School of Music is presenting a very unique performance. This amazing piece touches on many issues - first premiered in 1971 at the Kennedy Center, conducted by Maurice Peress. Maestro Peress, our QC Orchestra conductor, is bringing this work to life again in a fully staged version featuring QC orchestra, choir, women’s choir, opera studio… Please consider attending, inviting others, and sharing this with your students. “Mass proves to be greater than the sum of its parts. Commissioned to create a stage production to inaugurate the opera house at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., Bernstein turned to the Roman Catholic mass as a structure to investigate issues of faith and doubt, and of the political and social upheavals of the era of the late ’60s and early ’70s. MASS is an enormous piece. It calls for a large pit orchestra, two choruses plus a boy’s choir, a Broadway-sized cast (with ballet company), marching band and a rock band. It may seem ironic that such multitudes are marshaled for a work that celebrates a man’s “Simple Song”: his love and faith in God. But in the end, that simplicity is shown to be all the more powerful because of it. Leading up to the performance, a panel of experts will discuss the composer, the work, the premiere, and the legacy of Bernstein's most ambitious and once controversial composition. Participants: Maurice Peress, conductor of the 1971 premiere and the current production. Gordon Davidson, stage director of the 1971 premiere. Jamie Bernstein, daughter of the composer and a composer and writer herself. Michael Hume, chorus member at the premiere, and later performed the role of Celebrant. Lorca Peress, stage director for the current production.

Readers Needed for Scholarship for Asian Students

Dear all, First, I'd like to give you an update on the APIASF scholarship which Queens College students of Asian, Asian American, or Pacific Islander ethnicity can apply for for the first time this year. Since the competition opened in July, Approximately 150 QC students have started an application. I know many of you have encouraged those you know to apply, so I really appreciate your help insuring that eligible candidates are able to take advantage of the financial and professional development benefits of the APIASF scholarship. As part of the college's relationship with the APIASF, we are asked to provide volunteer readers for applications from all 15 eligible institutions. Some of you have already generously volunteered, but in case others might be interested, I thought I'd repeat the information I sent out in August. Applications will be reviewed between October 16, 2014 and November 14, 2014. Readers will have access to a secure website to review scholarship applications. To ensure that there are enough readers to evaluate all applications, readers are asked to commit to reading a minimum of 40 applications. Each application takes approximately 10-15 minutes to review. All volunteers, new & returning, are required to review a training document (PDF). The training covers basic information related to education in the Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities and provides an overview of the review and scoring process. All readers must have an undergraduate college diploma and/or 7-10 years of work experience. Readers do not need to be of AAPI ethnicity. If you are interested in volunteering as a reader, please complete the new reader registration form online at https://aanapisischolarship.apiasf.org/reader/. Quantitative Reasoning Across the Curriculum - applications due October 10 (update)

The Center for Teaching & Learning is accepting faculty applications for the development of assignments that will infuse quantitative reasoning skills throughout the curriculum during the 2014-2015 academic year. Support includes: 1) $800 stipend for participating in a 3-day Winter Session workshop, January 20-22, addressing the learning objectives and pedagogy of QR instruction, and 2) staff support during the year for the development of teaching materials, assignments, and evaluation methods.
