Open access is a publishing model in which readers have free access to the full text of scholarly journal articles online. The open access movement arose in response to the rising costs of academic journal subscriptions, and provides many benefits to scholarly authors, including wider distribution of their work, less lag time between writing and publication, and a greater opportunity to retain the rights to one’s own work. Greetings: The CTL series on mindfulness practices in teaching and learning continues this semester, led by Professor Rikki Asher (SEYS). Next session's theme is Mindfulness Practice for Professors and Staff: Practice being present as you move through your day. How can we learn methods to settle the mind, thoughts and projections? Best, Graciela Sent from my iPad Invitation to Take Part in the Team-Based Learning Academy Four-Day Intensive Training Institute January 2014 Dear Colleague, You are invited to join the third cohort of Brooklyn College faculty, who will have the opportunity to take part in training for Team-Based Learning this January to try this new approach in their classes in the Fall 2014 semester. Team-Based Learning (TBL) was first developed to facilitate active learning in large undergraduate classes. It has subsequently proved to be effective in a wide range of instructional settings. The advantages of TBL include improved attendance, increased pre-class preparation, better academic performance, and the development of interpersonal and team skills, in class sizes ranging from 10 to 400, with courses in hundreds of academic disciplines and students ranging from freshmen on academic probation to doctoral-level students. TBL has also been shown to reduce faculty burnout by promoting increased student responsibility, engagement in the learning process, and increased opportunities for positive teacher-student interactions. The TBL Academy, which is supported by a grant from the CUNY Office of Academic Affairs, will take you through the process of transforming a traditional course into a TBL course. $1,000 will be made available to faculty members who complete TBL Training during the January 2014 Intensive Training Institute (January 21, 22, 23, & 24, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.), attend some additional training sessions during the Spring 2014 semester to support the course redesign process, and work on revising their syllabus in Summer 2014 for implementing TBL in a course during Fall 2014. This initiative includes the opportunity to engage in supported research on the process and its outcomes. The TBL Academy will also have some sessions on research, the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), and presentation and publication opportunities. Application Deadline: December 1. Fernández Assistant Vice Provost Queens College, City University of New York http://people.qc.cuny.edu/faculty/efernandez ---------------------- Faculty are invited to attend two advanced online faculty development workshops: Essential Instructional Design for Faculty (October 21-28 and November 18-25) The Art of Feedback (November 18-25) These 8-day online workshops have no pre-requisites other than basic Blackboard skills and do not require pre-approval for registration. All faculty are welcome-whether teaching in traditional, hybrid or online format. Workshops can be taken on a casual basis or with the aim of receiving a certificate of completion.
