[MAEnglish] End-of-semester announcements
Dear Graduate Students, Our regular office hours for the spring semester will be ending this week, but please do email if you have any questions or need advising. And please read below for some important end-of-the-semester announcements: *1. Taking an Incomplete * If you're unable to complete a final course assignment and want to take an incomplete, please discuss and make arrangements with your professor. Keep in mind that an incomplete is a temporary grade and should be resolved ASAP. All INCs must be completed within 1 calendar year (so an INC in Spring 2019 must be resolved before the end of Spring 2020). *2. Registering for Summer and Fall 2019 Classes* Please register for your summer and fall classes ASAP, if you haven't already. Courses that are underenrolled could be in danger of being canceled by the College administration. I've attached the updated course descriptions here. Please note that there's a new course description and instructor for ENGL 727 during Summer Session 2. *3. Registering for ENGL 791 and 795* If you're planning to write your thesis essay or take an independent study in the fall, you should've already been in touch with me or Bill and also already asked the faculty members you'd like to work with (before they're gone for the summer). If you have questions or need copies of the sign-up forms, which are due by August 1, please let us know. *5. Graduation* Congratulations to everyone who is finishing up and graduating this semester ! The 2019 English Department Graduation Ceremony will take place on *Thursday, May 30*, around 12pm (or about 30 minutes after the campus-wide commencement <https://www.qc.cuny.edu/about/Commencement/Pages/Default.aspx>), in the Goldstein Theater. MA students who are graduating in Spring 2019, who already graduated in Fall 2018, and who won't be officially graduating till Summer 2019 are all welcome to participate in the ceremony. No RSVP or tickets are required for the department ceremony, though I recommend you and your loved ones get there by at least 11-11:30 to grab seats (and even earlier if you need to look for parking). Graduates should come up to the stage, and you'll be given instructions on where to sit, when to line up to get your name called, etc. Cap and gown are not required. The ceremony usually lasts about an hour, followed by a small reception with cake. *6. Apply to Write for QC Voices* QC Voices <http://qcvoices.qwriting.qc.cuny.edu/> is a student publication that trains writers to work with editors to reach a wide audience on a topic they choose. All QC students—graduate and undergraduate—are eligible to apply. Students who are interested should take a look at the website for a sense of the wide range of topics and styles they publish. Writers for QC Voices publish six columns each semester, and they attend five workshops. The salary is $600 per semester. For the academic year 2019-2020, QC Voices would also like to add writers who are interested in podcasting or video essays. Apply here <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf97mwQjDSyV52-hhSd-sAihdAWA22u4zSPMYqt3HYlDJJYiQ/viewform>, and if you have questions, contact the Faculty Mentor, Gloria Fisk at Gloria.Fisk@qc.cuny.edu. *7. CCNY's Grad Conference* Please see the attached flyer for CCNY's Graduate Literature Student Association conference, this Friday, May 17, from 11am-4pm. Keep in mind that most full-time faculty are not available on campus during the summer and may be slower to respond to email, as they're traveling or focused on their research. As always, please don't hesitate to email us, the Directors of Graduate Studies, if you have questions or concerns. Hope everyone's semester is winding down nicely, and wishing you all a lovely summer!
