HEAF was established in response to a compelling need to close the opportunity gaps in public education confronting underserved minorities in Harlem, Washington Heights, Brooklyn and the Bronx. Since that time, we have expanded our reach of the "forgotten middle" to include students from four of the five boroughs attending over 100 public schools across the city. HEAF creates pathways to college and the professional world for over 600 low-income New York City minority youth each year, by providing resources that help them achieve higher education, fulfilling careers, and greater lifetime earnings. I have included some additional information about our program below, and am reaching out because this Fall we launched a Queens program site for middle school students at Forte Preparatory Academy, located at 32-20 108th St, East Elmhurst, NY 11369. We are seeking volunteer tutors to work with our students on Saturdays from 1:00pm-2:30pm. Many of our students need support in the areas of English Language Arts, writing and reading comprehension, and we are very interested in having students from the Queens College English department volunteer with us. I am wondering what possibilities there might be to work together to recruit students to work with us this Spring I would be happy to schedule a call or in person meeting with you on campus to talk more about what a possible partnership could look like. Having served at-risk youth for over 30 years, we know that starting early is critical for developing the academic readiness, study habits, and mindset students need to enter and graduate from college preparatory high schools and four-year colleges. Many students start sliding in middle school; starting early helps them stay on track and develop the academic and personal skills they need to thrive in high school, college and beyond. HEAF has a track record of delivering strong, permanent outcomes.
