Subject: HEAF College Access program + volunteer tutor opportunity for Queens College English students
Greetings,
My name is Kelli Goodman and I am the Associate Director of Corporate and Community Engagement at the Harlem Educational Activities Fund (HEAF)
HEAF is an extraordinary college prep and leadership program founded in 1989 by Daniel and Joanna Rose. HEAF was established in response to a compelling need to close the opportunity gaps in public education confronting underserved minorities in Harlem, Washington
Heights, Brooklyn and the Bronx. Since that time, we have expanded our reach of the "forgotten middle" to include students from four of the five boroughs attending over 100 public schools across the city. HEAF creates pathways to college and the professional
world for over 600 low-income New York City minority youth each year, by providing resources that help them achieve higher education, fulfilling careers, and greater lifetime earnings.
I have included some additional information about our program below, and am reaching out because this Fall we launched a Queens program site for middle school students at Forte Preparatory Academy, located at 32-20 108th St, East Elmhurst, NY 11369.
We are seeking volunteer tutors to work with our students on Saturdays from 1:00pm-2:30pm. Many of our students need support in the areas of English Language Arts, writing and reading comprehension, and we are
very interested in having students from the Queens College English department volunteer with us. I am wondering what possibilities there might be to work together to recruit students to work with us this Spring
I would be happy to schedule a call or in person meeting with you on campus to talk more about what a possible partnership could look like.
Thank you in advance and I look forward to hearing from you.
Best
Kelli
ABOUT HEAF:
The HEAF Continuum has a direct, significant impact on the lives of our young participants - students whose educational outcomes are often stunted by financial and socio-economic barriers - by providing resources
to help them succeed in college, future careers, and life. Over the past 30 years, our programs have had a significant impact in the lives of our students. We bring a long-standing track record of delivering strong, permanent outcomes in excess of NYC and
national averages. We are so proud that nearly 100% of HEAF students graduate high school on time and are admitted into college.
Our HEAF Continuum is an 11-year suite of college access and success programs, consisting of:
·
High Expectations, which prepares middle school students for admission
to NYC's top public high schools through academic instruction, preparation for the Specialized High School Acceptance Test, and such electives as science, arts, and cultural literacy.
·
Summer Quest, which is our five-week summer enrichment program for
middle school students. Designed to combat summer learning loss, the program offers comprehensive academic and extracurricular activities.
·
College Quest, which offers intensive college preparation services
to high school students, including SAT prep, college tours, essay writing workshops, public speaking classes, one-on-one college/financial aid counseling, and opportunities to participate in college-level coursework.
·
Onward, our college success program, which provides our students
with the resources and support they need to make the transition to college, complete their undergraduate studies on time, and launch careers.
·
Our Youth Development and Leadership Academy, which offers a variety of opportunities for leadership development, career exploration, and service
learning activities.
Having served at-risk youth for over 30 years, we know that starting early is critical for developing the academic readiness, study habits,
and mindset students need to enter and graduate from college preparatory high schools and four-year colleges. Many students start sliding in middle school; starting early helps them stay on track and develop the academic and personal skills they need to thrive
in high school, college and beyond.
HEAF has a track record of delivering strong, permanent outcomes. Below are just a few of our students' achievements:
·
100% graduate high school on time - the 2018 NYC average is 64.6% for African-American students and 63.5% for Hispanic students.
·
Nearly 100% gain admission and enroll in four-year colleges immediately after graduating high school - the average for graduating Harlem high school seniors is 63.6%
·
83% of our college students earn a bachelor's degree within six years - the nationwide average is 37% for African-American students and 42% for Hispanic students, who are
enrolled in four-year colleges.
