[DataAnalyticsMAProgram 0123] Survey of Consumer Finances Analysis Scripts
by Joseph Cohen 11 Jan '24

11 Jan '24
Hello Analytics peeps: For those interested in studying data from the Survey of Consumer Finances<https://www.federalreserve.gov/econres/scfindex.htm>, I have just written a script that develops functions to analyze the data. The SCF is a national survey of what people own, owe, earn, and spend. It comes out every three years; the 2022 survey just came out this November. It's a fresh, high-quality, national data set on a topic people love to discuss: money. Click here to see a list of variables: https://sda.berkeley.edu/sdaweb/docs/scfcomb/DOC/hcbkx01.htm#1.HEADING If you are interested in the SCF, check out these scripts and have at it. I am validating and testing the functions as part of an R package to study this data set. Students who have taken 712 should recognize this endeavor as one that requires us to consider issues raised in our modules on survey data analysis and missing data handling. Please let me know if the functions don't work or if you see an error. If you would like to help develop the package over the spring semester, please let me know. Script to download SCF: https://josephnathancohen.info/posts/download-all-years-of-the-scf-locally/ Scripts to perform basic analytics functions on SCF: https://josephnathancohen.info/posts/functions-to-analyze-the-survey-of-con… Joe Joseph Nathan Cohen Associate Professor of Sociology Director of Queens Podcast Lab<https://queenspodcastlab.org> City University of New York, Queens College Powdermaker 252 6530 Kissena Boulevard Queens, New York 11367 Web: www.josephnathancohen.info<http://www.josephnathancohen.info> Email: joseph.cohen(a)qc.cuny.edu Twitter: @jncohen<https://twitter.com/jncohen>

10 Jan '24
Hello everyone! I have two items for the community: First, if you are interested in joining this spring's Household Finance Thesis Group, please reply to this email. You do not have to commit to anything. I am trying to negotiate a regular Zoom meeting with those who might do a thesis on this topic with me. Second, are any of you interested in baseball statistics? If so, I will be working on this topic throughout the semester as part of a course development project. Let me know if you are a Sabermetrics fan. Check out this post on downloading baseball data to R<https://josephnathancohen.info/posts/download-baseball-data-into-r/>. Joe

[DataAnalyticsMAProgram 0121] NY AAPOR will be holding a young professional paper exhibition on 4/25
by Mindy Rhindress 05 Jan '24

05 Jan '24
It is a nice way to get some visibility and feature the wonderful work you have done as student. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but it will likely be virtual where you will apply via an abstract and, once accepted, prepare a short presentation on your research that will be reviewed by local professionals. It is a contest where the winners are usually awarded upwards of $500 to $1000. They still have to nail down the specifics and I will get them to you when they are released. Meantime, if this is something that interests you, please contact me and I will share what I know. PS. It is highly competitive but we have had two instances where students from Queens College won awards. That motivated individuals often have greater agency in shaping their work, making broader impacts. If one finds a suitable match, the work environment becomes much more enjoyable and meaningful. [DataAnalyticsMAProgram 0118] Spring Thesis Group: Household Finances
by Joseph Cohen 01 Jan '24

01 Jan '24
Hello everyone! Are you writing a thesis this spring? Are you interested in doing a thesis about household finances? This spring, I will be running a thesis working group that will focus on household finances. We will mainly focus on the Survey of Consumer Finances<https://www.federalreserve.gov/econres/scfindex.htm>, but I can also work with students on the Consumer Expenditures Survey<https://www.bls.gov/cex/> or the Luxembourg Income Study<https://www.lisdatacenter.org/>. My hope is to get students with similar interests to work together and meet regularly. If you are interested in topics related to people's money -- what they own, owe, earn, and spend -- then please reach out to be part of the group. This might be a good topic choice for students interested in doing a thesis relevant to marketing or finance. We will meet weekly on Zoom. Students will enroll in Prof. Turner's thesis boot camp and meet with the working group. Let me know if you are interested or have questions. We will arrange a pre-semester Zoom later this month. Joe
