Underwater Dreams, written and directed by Mary Mazzio, and narrated by Michael Peña, tells the story of four Mexican-born boys—undocumented immigrants attending a public high school in Phoenix, Arizona—who, with the help of their teachers, built an underwater device out of Home Depot parts and won first prize in a national robotics competition hosted by NASA in 2004. This screening will be followed by a question-and-answer session with robotics team members Lorenzo Santillan and Luis Aranda, who are visiting from Phoenix, where they live and work through Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). The Q&A will be moderated by QC Professor Anahi Viladrich from the Sociology Department, whose work specializes in the education, culture, and health of immigrants in the United States. This film screened at the White House earlier this month as part of an national initiative to fund STEM education for underrepresented students. In support of this initiative, Queens College received a grant from Con Edison’s “The Power of Giving Program” to fund scholarships for three incoming freshman and three students already attending Queens College who show interest and potential in the study of science, technology, engineering, and math.
