This week (October 20-26, 2014) is Open Access Week<http://www.openaccessweek.org/>, an annual global event promoting open access as a new norm in scholarship and research. Open Access Week is dedicated to celebrating, promoting, and thinking about Open Access. For more information, please see the official Open Access Week website<http://www.openaccessweek.org/page/about> and the OA @ CUNY blog<http://openaccess.commons.gc.cuny.edu/>.

There are ways to participate remotely, or in person throughout CUNY. See below for more information.

1. You can learn about Open Access on the Queens College Libraries' website within this helpful guide to Open Access<http://library.qc.cuny.edu/research/guides/openaccess/index.php>

2. Follow along on Twitter with the #openaccessweek hashtag

3. Have some free time? Why not pick up some light reading! It's Open Access, of course.

o Open Access, by Peter Suber<https://mitpress.mit.edu/sites/default/files/titles/content/9780262517638_Open_Access_PDF_Version.pdf> (PDF)

4. Learn about Creative Commons<https://creativecommons.org/weblog/entry/43817> licenses for information on the web - you can assign a Creative Commons to your own work or use and share content created by others.

o We recommend this presentation from Jill Cirasella at the Graduate Center:

Whose To Use? And Use As They Choose? Creative Commons Licenses in Wikipedia and Scholarly Publishing<http://www.slideshare.net/cirasella/whose-to-use-and-use-as-they-choose>

5. Check out what CUNY is up to with Open Educational Resources<https://openaccess.commons.gc.cuny.edu/tag/oer/> (yes, FREE things you can use, modify, or create for teaching!)

o Obama is into it<https://creativecommons.org/weblog/entry/43817>.

o You can also Get Paid from CUNY to Learn about Open Educational Resources (OER)<https://openaccess.commons.gc.cuny.edu/tag/oer/>!

6. See the materials from the Authors' Rights event<http://openaccess.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2014/04/02/materials-from-authors-rights-event/> at the Graduate Center.

7. Attend a screening of The Internet's Own Boy (click here for the trailer)<https://vimeo.com/ondemand/internetsownboy/94238859>, a documentary examines the life and contribution of internet and information activist Aaron Swartz.

o Friday, October 24, 3-5pm @ Borough of Manhattan Community College, Rm N780

RSVP not required. Snacks will be served.

Brought to you by the LACUNY Scholarly Communications Roundtable

This week will be the first of many steps in a bigger push toward greater awareness of and participation in Open Access in the library, across campus, and across CUNY.

We have attached the text of this email as a PDF in case you'd like to print it.

Truly,

Kelly Blanchat
