I'm writing to give you advance notice of two upcoming events, which you'll receive via QCMailer mail in the next few days (the preliminary announcements are below, so you can pre-register if you wish).

The first event (Oct 19) is our first Tech Talk of the semester, and will focus on teaching online.  The second (Nov 1) is the presentation of a new report titled Improving the adjunct faculty experience at Queens College.

Re: Tech Talk: Teaching English online (Oct 19, 4-6pm)

The Center for Teaching & Learning cordially invites faculty and staff to the first Tech Talk of the semester, scheduled for Wednesday, October 19, 4-6pm(President's Conference Room, Rosenthal Library).

Title: Teaching English to Vietnamese students, online!
Presenters:  Donna Gruber and Nancy Mare, English Language Institute; Fei-Wen Pirovolikos, Center for Teaching & Learning

Abstract: Students around the world are eager to learn English from native speakers, and Queens College has excellent English teachers to fulfill that need.  Partnering with the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Training Center, the English Language Institute at QC launched a 10-week online course in summer 2011: one instructor in New York, 14 students in Vietnam.

Light refreshments will be served.

Re: Improving the adjunct faculty experience (Nov 1, 6-8pm, Patio Room)

In November 2010, the Center for Teaching & Learning called for participants in a task force that would offer advice on how part-time faculty might share teaching practices and to propose mechanisms for improving teaching services.  The resulting Adjunct Task Force worked through the beginning of this academic year, and produced a report, Improving the adjunct faculty experience at Queens College.
