Dear Faculty Colleagues
1. The following FACULTY positions FOR NEXT YEAR are nominated and then voted upon by full-time faculty through the Elections Committee:
Faculty/Student Disciplinary Committee (all faculty can vote)
College Wide at Large Senate Delegate (all faculty can vote)
Division Wide at Large Senate Delegate (faculty within each Division can vote)
If you are interested in being elected for one of these position, please go to https://sl.qc.cuny.edu/qcelection/StaffFacultyAppIns.php from now through 11:59 PM March 10
OTHER OPEN SEATS ON THE SENATE AND COMMITTEES:
2. All other Faculty Senators [delegates] represent Departments and are elected to the Senate by full time members of the individual Academic Departments.
3. a. The Chair, Deputy Chair, Secretary and other Academic Senate Executive Committee members are nominated from the floor of the Senate and voted upon by all Senators - faculty and students and they serve a one year term. The Chair and Deputy Chair must be QC Academic Senate Delegates (Senators) when nominated. This means that they are elected from the Senate floor at the first meeting of the new Senate. This year, that will occur on May 15, 2014.
3. b. The members of the Nominating Committee are nominated from the floor of the Senate and voted upon by all Senators -faculty and students and they serve a two year term.
4. All other Senate Committee members are nominated or self-nominated through the NOMINATING COMMITTEE (NOT the Elections Committee) and voted upon by the Academic Senate. Committees are two year terms but mid-term replacements on an as needed basis.
While it may seem cumbersome to have various layers and means of nominations and elections, it seems to me that it is important for shared governance that we continue to have these modalities which protect the various constituencies in their various contests ; especially WHO MAY VOTE for certain office-holders and who may serve as that office holder. All of these checks and balances are spelled out in the Senate Charter and Bylaws
