[UrbanStudiesCircular] Policy Symposium: Preparing NYC for a More Automated Economy, 9/27/2018
Please join Center for an Urban Future for a policy symposium on Preparing NYC for a More Automated Economy Thursday, September 27, 2018 8:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. The Greene Space 44 Charlton Street (at Varick Street) New York, NY This event is generously supported by Fisher Brothers and Winston C. Fisher and Verizon As in previous periods of technological transformation, the coming wave of automation may spur both economic dislocation and enormous opportunity. On the one hand, advances in automation, artificial intelligence, and machine learning will likely send shockwaves through much of the city's economy, causing some jobs to disappear and many others to be fundamentally transformed. At the same time, however, the transition to a more automated economy has the potential to spark the emergence of new industries and the creation of countless new jobs. This solutions-oriented symposium will explore what city policymakers, business leaders, and nonprofit practitioners should be doing now to get ahead of these massive changes. The first panel will discuss how New York can harness the technological changes driven by automation and AI to create jobs, sustain its competitive advantages, and grow the city's economy. It will examine which industries are poised for job growth in a more automated economy, and what city economic development officials can do to position New York to capture a significant share of this growth. The second panel will explore how to prepare the city's workforce for a more automated economy. It will delve into promising strategies for upskilling New Yorkers who currently work in fields that are at risk of automation, and identify changes that the city's schools, colleges, and workforce training programs need to make to better prepare New Yorkers for the new world of work.
