Intern, Community Engagement and Education Established in 1893, The Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS) is one of the city’s longest standing not- for-profit organizations advocating for excellence in urban design, planning, historic preservation, and community engagement. From saving Grand Central Terminal from destruction and preserving the lights of Times Square, to fostering the establishment of innovative land-use laws, MAS is at the forefront of New York’s most important campaigns to improve our city’s built environment by promoting economic vitality, cultural vibrancy, ecological sustainability, and social diversity. Internship Description Interns will support MAS staff on projects and day-to-day work including, but not limited to: researching and drafting advocacy positions and testimony; contributing to studies, reports, presentations and mapping projects; and developing educational resources and tools. Interns will also be invited to attend and assist with logistics associated with meetings and events, both during and outside of regular office hours, including: public hearings, community meetings, and public programs organized by MAS and/or partner organizations and agencies. Requirements Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate program focusing on city and regional planning, historic preservation, public policy, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, transportation planning, economic development or a related field. A limited number of paid internships are available. Unpaid positions will be considered for candidates eligible for either course credit or a stipend through their academic institution. Required Skills Strong written and verbal communication skills. Effective research skills. Ability to work both independently and in group settings and to successfully manage multiple projects. Demonstrable experience with Microsoft Office. Knowledge of New York City’s zoning, land-use planning, and environmental review processes (ULURP and CEQR) and current urban policy issues. Experience speaking publicly and making effective presentations. Preferred Skills Demonstrated interest in community engagement, advocacy and public process. Experience collaborating with partners from a variety of backgrounds. Experience with graphic design and graphic design software. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
