[UrbanStudiesCircular] NYPIRG Events!
Several opportunities from Queens College NYPIRG (New York Public Interest Research Group): 1.Generation Citizen (GC) trains current college students to partner with classroom teachers to lead a semester-long "Action Civics" program. The college student volunteers, called "Democracy Coaches," will take a leading role in the classroom 2 times per week during the Spring 2018 semester. They will teach middle school and high school students how to effect policy change by engaging with local government and leaders to solve community problems. Their students would choose an issue they care about, develop a strategic plan to address the issue, take real action, and then reflect on their successes, challenges, and plans moving forward. Democracy Coaches will become versed in local NYC politics, gain facilitation and public speaking experience, and will learn advocacy tactics and strategies. In addition to teaching a 45-minute class twice a week, they will attend a weekly 1-hour meeting on Queens College campus with fellow volunteers to share best practices, and receive additional training and mentoring. All Democracy Coaches will receive at least $200 stipend for transportation and incidentals, and some will be eligible for an additional $850 enhanced stipend. If you want more information or would like to sign up, please email the GC Program Associate Amanda Sale at asalel@generationcitizen.org. 2. March in the Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce in the 2018 Lunar New Year Parade on Saturday, February 17, 11am! Contact brenttonruiz@gmail.com for more information. 3.
