[UrbanStudiesCircular] Recent URBST graduate to speak on Gentrification in Flushing
Rachel Wu, a recent graduate of the Queens College Urban Studies Department, will be presenting research she conducted on gentrification in Flushing as part of her URBST 370 Service Learning internship with the Queens Historical Society. 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 23 at the Queens Historical Society, 143-35 37th Ave. Flushing, NY 11354. Abstract: Flushing is undoubtedly a racially diverse neighborhood comprised of a pan-Asian and Latino population. Recent and ongoing developments, however, complicate ideas of inclusion and diversity within the community. Implications of gentrification arise and as the relationships between growth, equity, and community are challenged, residents are left with luxury condominiums, less affordable amenities, and a changing environment. In order to track and understand these changes, wage and racial demographic data will be utilized to explain the groundwork through which these eventual changes were able to occur. The project takes a sociocultural approach to researching gentrification in Flushing and adopts the 7-train line as a geographic framework for development. By doing so, it aims to not only contribute to discourse on gentrification as a broad topic, but more importantly, to bring attention to the possibility of gentrification along the rest of the 7-train line.
