* Full Time Positions * Space Coordinator, Immigrant Movement International Corona Department: Public Programs & Community Engagement Reports to: IMI Corona Community Organizer Works closely with: Public Programs & Community Engagement, Education Position Classification: Full-time, hourly, $12/hour, full benefits Schedule: 35 hours/week. Tuesday – Saturday 10 – 4 PM and some evenings and holidays. About IMI Corona – Immigrant Movement International Corona: In 2011, Queens Museum and Creative Time collaborated with artist Tania Bruguera to launch Immigrant Movement International<http://immigrant-movement.us/wordpress/about/> a multi-year project whose mission is to help define the immigrant as a unique, new global citizen in a post-national world and to test the concept of arte útil or “useful art”, in which artists actively implement the merger of art into society’s urgent social, political and scientific issues. Since 2014 IMI Corona has been led by the Community Council a volunteer body that exists to help us break the doors that lock us in, so that our mind can fly more, so that we can connect our experiences and imagine new ways to live, to follow our dreams, and to fight and struggle together to make them a reality. Currently IMI Corona’s storefront on the main thoroughfare of Roosevelt Avenue in Corona, Queens hosts a variety of free experimental educational workshops facilitated by volunteer educators that serve the needs of local immigrants every day of the week. It also acts as a think tank for people’s philosophers to reimagine the role of immigrants in society and to work to create more just realities, and as a laboratory for the merging of arts and activism. Currently the Community Council is sharpening our popular education and organizing skills to more intentionally build an IMI Corona that reflects our values in practice and to identify what we want to change in our communities and how to organize ourselves to make that happen. IMI Corona is: * A community center for alternative education open to all regardless of legal status, where we mix creative and practical knowledge. * A think-tank for reflection, debate and action by people’s philosophers to reimagine the role of immigrants in society and to change unjust situations. * A laboratory for artivist practices that merge arts and activism. IMI Corona’s Values Are: * To promote social justice and respect for our rights through education and art. We create opportunities to share our knowledge. Everyone can be an educator, and everyone can learn. The educational space will be one of respect and trust; everyone will learn at their own pace without creating an atmosphere of competition. * To care for and question our own culture. To recognize the value of our traditions, and to create a space to protect and practice our traditions. But also, to recognize oppressive practices within our own culture and to create new traditions that open spaces for a diversity of cultures within our community without stereotyping. * To have a culture of unity, solidarity and support. We know that we are different, but we can work as a group. We accept constructive criticism and are kind when we critique. At IMI Corona we fight for: * Listening and defending the dignity of each human being. We want to create a space where our thoughts can be expressed so that we can be active people, so that we can care for each other, listen to each other, and speak our opinions without fear. * Access to education and health for migrants and workers in Corona and in New York, in solidarity and comradeship with all nationalities, races, genders, and sexual identities that live in our neighborhoods. * The creation of strong communities that can defend themselves and respond to the violence and oppression that we experience in creative and healing ways. We come together to learn, and we believe that politics is a way of acting as a group with a collective social justice conscience and an ethos of collaborative work. We believe in community organizing as the way to fight for social justice for immigrants, women, youth and workers.
