[UrbanStudiesCircular] Affordable Housing Exhibition 2/10
From Matthew G. Lasner<https://networks.h-net.org/users/matthew-g-lasner>
Please join me and Nicholas Dagen Bloom Wednesday, 2/10, 6:00 - 9:00 pm, for the opening of an exhibition we have co-curated as a companion to our new edited collection, Affordable Housing in New York: The People, Places, and Policies That Transformed a City (Princeton 2016). Mounted at Hunter College's acclaimed East Harlem Gallery, the exhibition explores a century of life in affordable housing in New York City with a view to generating bold and creative solutions for tomorrow. Featured are original photographs by David Schalliol, custom built models of apartments from various eras, a timeline of original and archival material, and photographs by public housing tenants produced through the Project Lives program, which offered NYCHA residents free photo classes and cameras. The exhibition will run through 5/15 and is open 12:00 - 5:00 pm Tuesday - Saturday. http://www.hunter.cuny.edu/eastharlem-artgallery In conjunction with the exhibition (and book) we are also offering several public programs this spring, including Friday walking tours (2/19 - 4/22), a documentary film night (3/2), and a discussion with NYCHA chair Shola Olatoye and other special guests in the Great Hall at Cooper Union (3/16). The first program, The Politics of Affordable Housing, will take place 2/24 at Hunter's Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute, 47-49 East 65th Street, as part of their 2016 election series. This event, which we will moderate, brings together in conversation Vicki Been, commissioner of the City of New York's Department of Housing Preservation and Development; Judi Kende, vice president and New York market leader for Enterprise Community Partners; Helen Rosenthal, New York City Council Member representing District 6 on Manhattan's Upper West Side; and Alex F. Schwartz, Professor at Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy at the New School, and Director of the Milano School's Urban Policy Lab. http://www.roosevelthouse.hunter.cuny.edu/events/politics-affordable-housing...
