Rate of pay: Undergraduate: $13.30/hour Graduate: $15.90/hour Skill sets needed: Good writing and communication skills; Familiarity with technical writing a plus; Familiarity with programming in SQL, Python, VBA, Javascript and/or Modelbuilder (for ArcGIS) strongly encouraged; familiarity with data analysis using statistical software such as R, with particular emphasis on spatial statistics such as Geographically Weighted Regression using ArcGIS Spatial Analyst a plus; familiarity with creating MS Access database schema, queries, reports, and forms (or equivalent) also preferred. Description of project: The Asset Management Unit in the Office of the Executive Deputy Commissioner for Strategic and Agency Services at the New York City Department of Transportation has several ongoing projects that require the use Geographic Information Systems (GIS), customized scripts to extend the use of GIS, and custom databases to organize our datasets. Students who qualify have the opportunity to work on projects such as 1) the joint inter-agency effort to digitize and QA/QC the title information for all NYC streets; 2) the digitization and QA/Q of pavement profile data for use in roadway deterioration modelling; 3) the creation and maintenance of an asset management database that allows users to maintain spatial and non-spatial asset data, organize metadata, query datasets, produce reports, and visualize data; 4) the creation of webmaps using free open-source software for data visualization; 5) the creation of dashboards using MS Excel, MS Access or other open-source software for data visualization; 6) building models using Modelbuilder for ArcGIS or scripts using Python in order to extend the ArcGIS interface; 7) geographically weighted regression analysis to create predictive models. Please describe average daily duties required: Depending on the type of project to which the student is assigned, they will be required to do tasks such as: digitizing, updating, or creating new data; correcting errors in shapefile geometry and attribute data; updating or creating metadata associated with the shapefile; updating or creating data dictionaries; creating forms, queries, reports, and possibly validation logic; creating scripts/toolsets/toolbars using Python; creating webmaps; creating dashboards; spatial analysis; regression analysis What will the student learn from this experience?: Depending on the type of project to which the student is assigned, they will learn how to 1) create and maintain feature data, create and maintain metadata, data dictionaries, and perform quality control and quality assurance on Geographic Information System datasets; 2) create and maintain a robust MS Access database of mapped assets that will support the decision-making process of the end users, and/or 3) create models using Model Builder and create scripts/toolsets/toolbars for ArcGIS using the Python programming language.
