Steinberg will discuss his recent publication in the Boston Review titled "The Moynihan Report at Fifty: The Long Reach of Intellectual Racism." The abstract is below and attached. RIRE showcases research on racial and ethnic issues conducted by scholars at Queens College. A seminar series is part of this effort, as is a working paper series for electronically distributing research within and beyond QC prior to publication. Abstract: Following protests in Ferguson, Baltimore, and New York, public discussions about the status of blacks included claims about the "dysfunctional black family." Such claims harken back to the 1965 publication of The Negro Family: The Case for National Action written by celebrated U.S. Senator from New York Daniel Patrick Moynihan. To mark the 50th anniversary of "The Moynihan Report," Stephen Steinberg critically investigates its intellectual origins. He asks: "What prompted [Moynihan] to undertake a study of 'the Negro family' in the first place? After all, Moynihan was a political scientist with a Ph.D. in International Economics [working as] assistant secretary in the Department of Labor. What did he know about 'the Negro Family'...? And where did Moynihan find the intellectual fodder for his report...?" Taking inspiration from "Deep Throat's" famous advice to "follow the money," Steinberg moves to "follow the endnotes." In doing so, he reveals "the invisible hand behind [the report]" that critics charge with having "derailed the civil rights revolution at [a] critical juncture in its history."
