The PS 149 Community School Success Mentor Program is an evidence-based, data-driven school mentoring model that seeks to improve attendance, behavior and educational outcomes for at-risk students in our neediest communities nationwide. Youth Advocates are trained to serve as advisors, motivators, connectors, confidence-builders, and early warning systems for chronically absent students at risk of getting off track – both in school and in life. Using early warning systems and data to identify struggling students before they get off track or drop out. This is the nation's largest effort to use evidence-based, school-linked mentoring to drive school and life success. The Youth Advocate (YA) plays a valuable role in the Community School Success Mentor Program. The YA develops key relationships and makes regular, weekly contact with participants and their parents of an identified cohort in order to guide them, and to reach attendance and other goals. The Youth Advocate also promotes learning, communication skills, self-esteem and socialization skills for youth participants in the program. The YA, in collaboration with the parents, teachers and staff members, actively support participants in setting and achieving goals, and in working on improving overall behaviors. The Youth Advocate plays a very important role in the child’s development. Responsibilities: • Meeting with participants on a weekly basis. • Documenting weekly contacts in chart. • Setting Goals for each participant and regularly following up on the progress of the goals. • Completing monthly stats in a timely manner. • Maintaining an active case load. • Making contact with parents and school officials regularly. • Running small group sessions with participants. • Collecting report cards every marking period from participants. • Participating in bi-monthly staff meetings and other training opportunities. • Regularly reviewing and maintaining attendance and outcome data and submitting attendance reports in a timely manner. • Attending field trips where necessary. • Obtaining and making copies of all relevant forms and necessary paperwork for all participants. • Creating individual folders for each participant and maintaining accurate and updated notes. • Maintain an efficient filing system for all participants folders and general correspondences. Qualifications: · Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree · Minimum of two (2) years' experience working with elementary school-aged children. · Track record of developing strong relationships with parents · Demonstrated ability to plan and facilitate one on one meetings or small group meetings. · Must have a commitment to work from a strength-based and/or youth development perspective. · Demonstrate cultural competency · Demonstrated attendance and punctuality in meeting required schedule. · Excellent organizational, prioritization, communication and interpersonal skills. · Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate discretion. · Bilingual (English/Spanish) a requirement.
