?Earth and Environmental Sciences Doctoral Program ?Presents a Lecture by ?Richard A. Walker ?Geography, University of California, Berkeley "Pictures of a Gone City: Tech and the Dark Side of ?Prosperity in the San Francisco Bay Area" ? ?This book talk addresses issues raised in Pictures of a Gone City-Walker's ?sweeping account of the Bay Area in the age of the tech boom. It will ?take up the phenomenal concentration of IT in Greater Silicon ?Valley, the fabulous economic growth of the bay region and the ?unbelievable wealth piling up for the 1%-in contrast to the fate of the ?working class and people of color earning poverty wages. It will survey the ?urban scene, including the Bay Area's great housing bubble and a ?geography turned inside out by an exploding metropolis. Walker will ?consider the environmental impact of the boom, the fantastical ideology of ?TechWorld, and the political implications of the tech-led transformation of ?the bay region. Please join AAARI for a talk, "We're the New Citizenship": LA’s Asian and Latin@ Immigrant Activists on Politics as Embodied and Emotional, by Nadia Kim, on Friday, October 19, 2018, from 6pm to 8pm, at 25 West 43red Street, 10th Floor, Room 1000, between 5th & 6th Avenues, Manhattan. This talk is free and open to the general public. In recent decades under runaway neoliberalism, “foreignized” and unauthorized immigrants have increasingly made political inroads by way of grassroots community activism and by sidestepping the need for formal political channels and, at times, even dismissing them. By way of nearly four years of ethnographic observation, 49 in-depth interviews, and extensive document analysis, Prof. Nadia Kim focuses on one of these growing Asian and Latin@ immigrant mobilizations, that for Environmental (Health) Justice (and immigration and education justice) in industrial-port Los Angeles. Kim finds that much more than curtailing asthma, the activists see their organizing as battling the ethnoracism and classism that they deem responsible for their varied plights and as the crucible in which they forge their belonging under American nativist racism, now at its apex under President Trump.

Latin American and Latino Studies Presents "The City of Short Paths vs The Smart City" a lecture by Felipe Delmont Monday, November 5, 2018 Noon - 2 pm President's Conference Room #2 The Smart City calls itself "sustainable" and promises us an easier life. It constitutes one of the greatest threats that our species are facing; it makes us stop learning, and it dissociates us. In response to the smart city, I propose "The City of Short Paths", a concept I developed while working as an urban planner in the shanty towns and suburbs of Maracaibo, Arequipa and Ciudad de Mexico in Latin America. It refers to the permanent construction of the city by its people in a specific territory, and with their own resources. For this to happen, people must re-engage in a common dialogue in build a city to stay, street "smart", the opposite of the increasingly ungraspable "smart" city. Commissioner Victor Calise of the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities will speak on Friday, October 12th at 3 pm in Powdermaker 115. All are welcome. Here is the commissioner's bio: As Commissioner of the New York City Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities, Victor Calise has been a tireless adv?ocate for people with disabilities in both the Bloomberg and de Blasio Administrations. Responsible for ensuring that New York City is the most accessible city in the world, Calise advises the Mayor and agency partners on accessibility issues, spearheads public-private partnerships, and chairs the Accessibility Committee of the City's Building Code. A dedicated public servant for over two decades, Commissioner Calise previously worked in the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation where he led efforts to make one of the largest and most complex parks systems in the world universally accessible by ensuring compliance with construction standards, managing facilities, and developing training materials. Calise has facilitated relationships with businesses in a myriad of sectors including technology, finance, government, and healthcare. His leadership led to the creation of the NYC: ATWORK employment initiative-the first public-private partnership that directly connects jobseekers with disabilities and businesses. The Commissioner also consistently engages with innovators in cybersecurity, autonomous vehicle development, and digital accessibility in order to ensure that accessibility remains a priority in technological advancements. A recognized expert on diversity and inclusion, the Commissioner regularly consults with high-level stakeholders regarding accessibility. He is frequently invited to national and international conferences and has given numerous keynote speeches. Passionate about the human rights of people with disabilities, Commissioner Calise supports the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and works with international partners to ensure that people with disabilities are mainstreamed into society. The Commissioner received a B.S. in Sports Management from St. John's University and an M.A in Urban Affairs from Queens College, CUNY. Calise-an avid athlete-competed in the 1998 Paralympic Games in Nagano, Japan as a member of the first U.S. national sled hockey team.
