Marina will share stories from her study of, and participation in, movements such as Occupy Wall Street, housing defenses in the US and Europe, struggles against mines and Monsanto in Latin America, Frack-Off in the UK and neighborhood assemblies in Greece. In each of these places, she observes, people now look to one another for power and transformation, and through self-organization and direct action not only resist, but create alternative ways of being and living. September 9, 2015 POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT Part-Time Data Analyst The New York City Labor Market Information Service (NYCLMIS), housed at the Center for Urban Research at the CUNY Graduate Center, seeks a part-time (14-18 hours per week) data analyst to work as part of a team that performs labor market research, prepares information tools, and provides strategic consultation to education, workforce and economic development practitioners and policy makers. The overall function of the NYCLMIS is to help our clients align their programs and policies with the demands of the labor market. Responsibilities With supervision and support from the director and other NYCLMIS staff, the data analyst will: * Conduct quantitative analyses of labor market and demographic data; * Assist with the collection, organization and maintenance of data; * Generate tables and charts for review by senior staff and for placement in publications; and * Related analytical and organizational tasks, as needed. Qualifications * Master's degree in sociology, public policy, economics or a related discipline; * Two years of relevant professional experience in a research or public policy setting (additional experience may be substituted for the degree); * Experience analyzing data, preferably using SPSS (SAS, Stata, and R are also acceptable); * Ability to create professional-quality tables and charts (e.g., using Excel, R, PowerPoint, or InDesign); and * Ability to work in a client centered, deadline-oriented environment. The following qualifications are not required, but are considered a plus: * Interest in and familiarity with the workforce development policy, programming, and/or data sets; * Experience with relational databases and database management systems; * Experience working with APIs to access online content; and * Familiarity with labor market information sources from the New York State Department of Labor, the Census Bureau, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. We offer an hourly pay rate that is competitive with comparable academic and nonprofit research positions. The exact rate will be determined by the candidate's level of experience and skill. This fall, Queens Memory/Queens Library is collaborating with the college's Office of Service Learning to recruit student volunteers for our Hip Hop Initiative. The project seeks to celebrate and preserve evidence of the impact and rich history of Hip Hop music and culture in the borough of Queens. We still have some spots available for students to conduct oral history interviews, digitize photos and other documents, write blog posts, and organize public programming events on Hip Hop topics. Labowitz Theatre for the Performing Arts | 1 Washington Place In this two-part lecture, "Forensic Architecture," Eyal Weizman will discuss the work of the research agency of the same name that he established in 2011. Forensic Architecture - Part One: The Image Complex, will be delivered at NYU Gallatin, while Forensic Architecture - Part Two: The Conflict Shoreline will be delivered at NYU's Department of Social and Cultural Analysis on September 24. Drawing on the insight and expertise of architects, historians, theorists, filmmakers, and artists, the research agency Forensic Architecture undertakes spatial research in and of conflict zones and mobilizes this research in different forums, both political and legal. While forensics is a tool that states and governments use to monitor their citizens or subjects, the practice of "forensic architecture" is used in a civilian context in order to reorient the practice of contemporary forensics and invert or "return" its gaze. It uses multidisciplinary methods and aesthetic practices to monitor the states and challenge their authority, especially when they engage in war. Weizman will discuss the problem that political counter-forensics has in making connections across scales: from the individual incidents through patterns of urban violence to large and slow environmental transformations.
