BEAM DISCOVERY Discovery is BEAM’s day camp program for rising 7th graders. During Discovery, students spend five weeks learning advanced math, making friends with others who love math, and building the skills, confidence, and self-identity for success. Courses at BEAM Discovery cover: · Logical Reasoning introduces logical reasoning including deductive logic, case analysis, working methodically, and proof by contradiction. · Math Fundamentals leads students to understand mathematics from school without relying on memorized procedures. · Creative Problem Solving exposes students to problems that require creativity, primarily through math contest problems. · Applied Math introduces students to different areas of work related to mathematics. Examples include programming, astronomy, mathematical biology (such as predator and prey models, or genetics), or estimation and Fermi problems. BEAM SUMMER AWAY Summer Away is BEAM’s residential summer program for rising 8th graders, hosted on college campuses. During Summer Away, students learn real proof-based math, build a community of peers, develop independence and have fun. Faculty, Counselors, and Program Staff live on campus with the students for the duration of the program while students discover a new environment in these idyllic settings. In addition to summer salary, BEAM covers room, board, and travel.
