Dear TIME 2000 Students, The How To Make Math Count Conference is a mathematics education conference for teachers of grades K-8. It is an optional conference ( i.e., not required); you are welcome to attend and TIME 2000 will pay your registration fee. Please note that is at Molloy College in Rockville Centre and you must provide your own transportation. It is in January, during QC’s winter break so you should not have classes here unless you are taking Winter Session classes. In order for TIME 2000 to pay your registration fee, follow the instructions below. Do NOT pay by credit card. After you submit the registration form, you will receive confirmation that you have registered. Since this conference is for K-8 teachers, it is important that you select workshops that will be of interest to you. Grade levels are listed for each workshop. Attached please find an Excel file with your specific job assignments on one worksheet and descriptions of the duties of each job on a different worksheet (see tabs near the bottom of the file). Your name might be listed as many as six times, or just once, depending on the time frame of the job(s) assigned. Remember to look for your name more than once. Then, click on the second worksheet tab to learn what each job entails. Check for updates and changes to the list between now and the event date. Notify me immediately if your name is not on the list, your job assignment is not explained or in conflict with another job assigned to you, or if you cannot perform your assigned duties. If you are not assigned to a job at this time, please help set up the food items if necessary. Help maintain the food tables (until guests are seated in the Ballroom) by refilling items (extra water bottles are under the table) and/or moving them up to the front of the food tables. Also, throw out any garbage left on tables. Check email for possible change of start time. 8:30am-9:30am: GREET our guests and direct them to the Registration Desks. There are separate tables for teachers/professors (on the left as you exit the elevators) and students (across from elevators). 9:10am: All TIME students in the vicinity should start directing people in the lobby and the ballroom to be seated in the SU Ballroom. Ushers must make sure all seats are filled starting with the front rows, all sections, of the Ballroom. Make sure students do not skip seats as the room will be filled to capacity. Speak up and tell students where they should sit. 9:30am: Program starts. Dr. Artzt makes opening comments, followed by the QC President and then the Keynote. All TIME 2000 students without an assignment at this time should be seated quietly in the auditorium, behind the guests. If you need to report to your next job before 11am, sit on an aisle so that you may leave quietly. Most importantly, TIME 2000 students should be good role models for the high school students. Please do not talk during the presentations. Remember to allow the high school guests to answer the questions posed by the presenters. 10:45am (shortly before the keynote speaker finishes his presentation): * Presenter Escorts Meet the presenter you will escort to a classroom in the SU lobby at the time requested. This could actually be earlier than 10:45am. Check with Nicole as per the instructions in the Excel file. Sit in the back, on an aisle, so you can leave discreetly. * EQUIPMENT MONITORS: If "Equipment" is your job assignment, you are also the presenter escort. Follow instructions for presenter escort, above and in the excel file. The presenter may be using PowerPoint and a projector. Rooms in Powdermaker Hall have cabinets or closets with all the equipment. Pick up keys for the cabinets from Lori in PH 002 before you go to the assigned classroom. Help the presenter turn on the computer and log-in with your QC info. If there are technical problems in a room in PH, contact Amanda or Reinald or get help from Media Services in PH 136. If there are technical problems in a room in the SU, please contact Christian, 347-459-7560. * If you are asked to bring graphing calculators to a presenter, please be responsible for distributing and then collecting all the calculators BEFORE the end of each session. Pick up the calculators from Lori, PH 002 before the start of session I. After session II, please return the calculators to Lori at 1:15pm, in PH002. Then, escort your presenter to SU, 4th floor and help with lunch. 10:50am: Escorts meet the captains in the SU Lobby. After the keynote speaker finishes speaking, you will line up around the ballroom perimeter as directed by the captains with your room signs held high. Follow instructions listed on job descriptions. Room signs should be picked up from the teacher registration desk before 9:30am or from the captains when you meet now. Follow instructions of captains so that rooms are listed in numerical order and escorts are well-spaced around the room. Expect 25-28 students per classroom. Leave the SU for your session I room as instructed by the dismissal captains. 11:15am-12:05pm: Session I * Escorts will bring students to assigned classrooms. All TIME 2000 students in a classroom should offer their assistance to the presenter. Also assist with the distribution and collection of calculators and other materials. Help ensure that all equipment is collected from students before students leave the classroom. * At the end of the first workshop, presenters will stay in the same room and students will move to a different room for the second session. Students in the same room for Session I will move together, as a group, to a room for session II. When the first workshop ends, announce to the students in the room to follow you to the next workshop. Know your assigned room numbers! 12:15pm-1:05pm: Session II Escorts should lead the guests to the second room. I am looking for some QC college students (2-5) interested in doing field hours working with students Wednesdays from 1:30-2:30 and Fridays from 12:30 to 1:30. I am hoping to get volunteers' help with supporting the academic needs of students in a math elective class, which is for those who need to retake the Algebra Regents. Would you be able to forward this information to anyone you think might be interested in helping our students who are all ELLs. Last year's volunteers, Thomas and Jenny, were so helpful and instrumental. Dear TIME 2000 Students, Thank you, in advance, for helping with the TIME 2000 conference on Friday. To help things run smoothly, please read updated information below and attend the meetings appropriate for you. 1. Monday, October 29 STUDENT PANEL meeting, 12:40pm, PH 117 2. Monday, October 29 TECHNOLOGY meeting, 1pm, PH 117. This meeting is open to all students but must be attended by presenter escorts and students assigned to equipment and/or calculators. Media services will provide instructions on how to make sure the laptops are connected to the projectors correctly and how to use other equipment in the room. It is good to know how to do this in case a presenter has a problem with the technology. FRESHMAN should join us as soon as they arrive to campus after LAMS. 3. Thursday, November 1 HELP MOVE TO THE SU, 1:30pm, PH 002. A QC truck will meet us at PH at 1:30. If you are available, please help move the prepared conference items (boxes of folders and other supplies) from the office to the truck and then meet us in front of the SU to move items off the truck into the SU. This usually takes no more than half an hour. 4. Friday, November 2 CONFERENCE DAY! All students should meet in the SU 4th floor lobby and arrive by 8am. If you are there earlier, please help us set up the materials that were delivered on Thursday. This involves taping signs to tables and moving the folder boxes to the correct areas. Ask Alyssa, Christian or Mrs. Weinman what you can do to help. REMEMBER to wear your TIME 2000 blue tee shirts (perhaps over a long sleeve shirt if it will be cold) and a smile. Reminder: Reply today if you have not yet done so and would like to help the children who are separated from their parents Seeking JRMF Facilitators! The Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival (JRMF) seeks facilitators for mathematical activities with immigrant children ages 5 to 17 who are separated from their parents. The candidates should have a working knowledge of high school mathematics and be comfortable working with children who are not fluent in English. A knowledge of Spanish is desirable but not required. Hours are generally 11:30 to 1:30 on Mondays and Wednesdays and occasionally on Fridays. The sessions occur in the financial district. Days are flexible, and consistency of attendance not necessary. An hour of training is required to begin. At least one additional two-hour session are requested over the semester to expand candidates’ problem portfolios. JRMF supports locally organized events that inspire K through 12 students to think critically and to explore the richness and beauty of mathematics through collaborative, creative problem-solving. Our Festivals engage many types of students, including those who don’t typically enjoy competition or working under time pressure. Good Morning, We are reaching out today to share some exciting opportunities for your students to engage with our company as we continue to make a difference in the lives of New York City's public school students. This year, we expanded our service offerings to our partner schools to include extended learning time programs (i.e. Saturday Academy and after school programs) and our intervention programs (i.e. small group tutoring during the day and college awareness). In a city where we have 1.1 million public school students and 1.3 million college students, it is embarrassing to have one of the largest achievement gaps. We understand the potential of college students to change educational outcomes for children - it's been a core part of our belief system since our organization was started eight years ago on a college campus. Now, we're working to mobilize one of our city's most underutilized assets (the intellectual capital of our college students) to change the narrative for low-income kids in NYC. We've partnered with almost a dozen schools across NYC to provide small group tutoring, Saturday, and college awareness support. All of our positions are paid, and we're looking to fill almost 30 slots by the end of this month. Students who work with us on multiple engagement will also be eligible for College Tuition Reimbursement.
