Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics (BEAM), a project of the Art of Problem Solving Initiative, Inc., is seeking instructors for a program that gives everyone a chance to excel in mathematics. Faculty design and teach their own courses to bright middle school students from low-income and historically marginalized communities. Ideal faculty candidates include college or university professors with strong teaching backgrounds, and middle or high school teachers with strong mathematics backgrounds. Junior faculty positions are also available for graduate students and early career teachers, and we encourage applications from other professionals with an interest in math education. During summer 2021, we will run two programs: BEAM Summer Away and BEAM Discovery. Due to COVID-19, we will be running our programs for the Summer of 2021 virtually. We can lend staff any necessary technology they need to work for us. BEAM Summer Away: Compensation: $5,000 (or $3,300 for junior faculty such as graduate students or early-career teachers) for five weeks (four of teaching and program contribution, plus pre-camp training and post-camp wrap-up discussions. If there is technology you need to participate, we will lend you some. Program dates: The CA dates (for students from LA) will be June 16 to July 20th, 2021. The NY dates (for students from NYC) will be June 30th August 3rd, 2021. Courses at BEAM Summer Away can be: · Pure math such as number theory, combinatorics, graph theory, or logic; · Applied math such as circuit design, programming, astrophysics, or genetics; or · Problem solving, either Strategies for Mathematical Thinking or Solving Big Problems. BEAM Discovery: Compensation: $2,200-$5,600 for six weeks depending on course load (part-time positions available). If you have technology you need to participate, we will lend you some. Programs Dates: LA Dates: June 16 (14th for Junior Faculty) to July 27, 2021 NYC Dates: June 30 (28th for Junior Faculty) to August 9, 2021 BEAM Discovery teachers receive guidance to plan courses or use prepackaged courses in one or two of the following: · Logical Reasoning introduces logical reasoning including deductive logic, case analysis, working methodically, and proof by contradiction. · Math Fundamentals leads students to understand mathematics from school without relying on memorized procedures. · Creative Problem Solving exposes students to problems that require creativity, primarily through math contest problems. · Applied Math introduces students to different areas of work related to mathematics. Examples include programming, astronomy, mathematical biology (such as predator and prey models, or genetics), or estimation and Fermi problems. For both: We've found that the community of teachers that we create, bringing together instructors from across many different academic areas, is one of the program's strengths and provides a great experience for all participants. Good candidates will work well on a close-knit team and will be able to bring unique curriculum perspectives to the program. Experience with other extracurricular outreach programs (such as math summer programs or math circles, MATHCOUNTS, programming workshops, or similar) are also a plus. We will provide mentorship, textbooks, and other resources as needed. This is a unique opportunity to influence the lives of young students. Our students have tremendous potential and a strong ability for abstract reasoning, but because of their schools and backgrounds they often have not had the same training as more affluent peers. Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics (BEAM), a project of the Art of Problem Solving Initiative, Inc., is seeking undergraduate students or recent graduates to be counselors and teaching assistants for a summer program that gives everyone a chance to excel in mathematics. During summer 2021, we will run two programs: BEAM Summer Away and BEAM Discovery. Covid-19 Note: We will be running the program virtually. We can lend staff any necessary technology they need to work for us. At both programs, you'll create a vibrant social experience for kids who are discovering for the first time that there are other people who like doing mathematics; you'll also be a TA for classes on topics such as number theory, combinatorics, problem solving, and computer science. Be a role model and guide for students who are just beginning to set their educational path! Counselors must be strong mathematically, be reliable, and take initiative. They should be charismatic and able to help the kids have fun. All counselors must be at least 18 years old by the beginning of the program. In addition, applicants must be authorized to work for an employer in the US. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of employment Visas at this time. International students able to obtain CPT or OPT are welcome to apply. BEAM Summer Away Compensation: $3300 for five weeks (four weeks of programs, plus some pre-work and training and two days of wrap-up discussions). Dear TIME 2000 Seniors, Senior year is almost half over! As you prepare to start student teaching, I'd like to remind you to get as much other work done before the start of student teaching so you have appropriate time to devote to the other projects and to student teaching. This includes your Graduation Celebration presentation. I urge you to complete as much of the planning as possible during January. You can plan the theme, the professor speeches, the layout, and gather your photos now and wait to write your personal speeches after you have some experience student teaching. But TIME WILL FLY so try to get most of it done during the break and let me know if you need my assistance. Since QC is remote this spring, we cannot plan an in-person event for May. However, if COVID conditions improve enough to allow for a June gathering on campus, I will let you know. In the meantime, do plan for a virtual event that can be changed to an in-person vent as needed. Have safe and healthy holidays! After learning Calculus One had a 50 percent drop rate, the problem became clear - a lack of student support. "They were entering as new students, with no friends and no support system, and they were too shy to go to their professor for help," she said. "If they were thinking of becoming math teachers, that first college experience would kill it." She envisioned a new type of teacher preparation program. One that supported students throughout their academic career, providing a built-in network of classroom friends, an accessible faculty mentor, tuition assistance and a clear path toward a teaching degree. Thanks to a National Science Foundation grant in 1997, Teaching Improvements through Mathematics Education, better known as TIME 2000 - to mark the looming millennium - launched. Nearly 25 years later, it's still going strong with an alumni network of more than 250 educators, and a 95 percent five-year classroom retention rate for program graduates. Past graduates are her best recruiters, said Artzt, TIME 2000 director. "I keep very close contact with the students. I want to know: What's going on? What do they need help with? What do they need me to know?" said Artzt who receives students' grades before they do and works with those who earn a C or less. Regular meetings with math professors also keep her in the loop. "I want anyone teaching a TIME 2000 student to have an investment in their learning." TIME 2000 students take all mathematics and education courses together; one of the first classes, first semester freshman year, is Human Development & Learning. "The course helps them reflect on their successes in learning math in high school and learn to apply that knowledge to learning math in college," said Frances R. Curcio, program co-director and Queens College professor emerita. Field work starts early. Freshmen observe a class taught by a Queens College alumna at the Louis Armstrong Middle School in Queens. "We meet with the teacher before the lesson, to discuss psychological principles to be applied, then we sit around the perimeter of the room and observe. Following the lesson, we debrief," said Curcio, a PSC retiree. "It gets them familiar with how hard it is to teach - many are shocked how much work goes into lesson prep and assessing student needs." Other program features include an annual high school math conference, a tutoring club, newsletter, focused mentoring, journal submissions and monthly hands-on seminars. "The seminars relate math to the real world," explained Curcio noting that past guests include a choreographer who discussed the math of dance, and a mathematician versed in the interlocking designs of artist M.C. Escher. Key to the program's success is keeping students together and having a dedicated faculty member they can turn to, said Artzt. "The relationships students have, that support group, is what gets them through when things get hard." During the recent tumultuous days, we have been reminded that the racial injustices existing in our country and world need immediate and sustained attention and action. We have seen signs carried by CHILDREN, many of whom are likely New York City Public School students, as they participated in protests against the pervasive racist behaviors toward Black people. Seeing young children and their families crying to be heard caused us to reflect on our own responsibilities as mathematics educators. Although there are massive inequities throughout education, we are acutely aware of the particular issues surrounding the learning and teaching of mathematics, and the historically elitist view of who can learn math. Black students and students of color have been underserved in our educational system. We must work to ensure that every student learns math, remembering that what teachers might erroneously perceive as "lack of ability" is really about lack of ACCESS to high-quality educational opportunities. We, the mathematics education faculty at Queens College, commit to continually learn about the inequities within our educational system and to examine our own implicit biases in order to provide equal opportunities for our pre- and in-service teachers and their students, particularly those who are Black and students of color. We will begin by including anti-racist pedagogical materials in our coursework and class discussions. Our mission is to prepare teacher candidates who are knowledgeable, passionate, and well-equipped to teach in a culturally responsive manner. Black Lives Matter. Dear Future Math Methods Students, I continue to hope that you are all well. Another school is now available to add to your choice list for student teaching placement. The school is H. Frank Carey in the Sewanhaka School District. The placement is with a math special ed teacher so this would be a good placement if you are considering getting certified in special ed at a later time or if you just want to learn more about differentiated instruction. However, the teacher's schedule for next school year is not yet known so I do not know if this will be a middle school or high school placement. Given this situation, the placement is currently open to all methods students and as soon as the teacher has her schedule for next year, I will be able to place the appropriate candidate. Dear TIME 2000 Students, We hope you and your loved ones are all well. We know that many of you have suffered a great deal during this pandemic that hit us in the beginning of March 2020. Due to that reason, we did not want to give you a very demanding portfolio assignment, but rather substitute it with a document you can write and keep forever that records this historic time in your life. Clearly, among other things, this abrupt change to online instruction and learning has affected both your professors and you. Your professors have had to quickly adapt to online platforms they might have been totally unfamiliar with before that might not have even been aligned with their original course objectives. You, as students, have had to adapt to the many different platforms used by your different professors and try to incorporate learning strategies you have never used before. The main purpose of this "portfolio" is for you to document how your developing knowledge and beliefs about mathematics, students, and teaching and learning and your goals for instruction have been influenced by this most unusual year in TIME 2000. You will do this by answering the assigned questions to the best of your ability. The assignment with grading rubric is posted on the TIME 2000 Google Classroom page. All work should be uploaded to Classroom. The due date is June 12, 2020. We hope those of you who are well, stay well and practice safe social distancing. The post below was shared with me because it is written by a teacher. May you find it as inspiring as I do! Stay strong and in a world with a lot of what ifs let's think about these ones a bit... With the rest of the school year going to online learning and in some places, canceled altogether-students will miss 2 to 2.5 months of traditional classroom time. Many people are concerned about students falling behind because of this. Yes, they may fall behind when it comes to classroom education... But what if... What if instead of falling "behind", this group of kids are ADVANCED because of this? Hear me out. What if they have more empathy, they enjoy family connection, they can be more creative and entertain themselves, they love to read, they love to express themselves in writing. What if they enjoy the simple things, like their own backyard and sitting near a window in the quiet. What if they notice the birds and the dates the different flowers emerge, and the calming renewal of a gentle rain shower? What if this generation are the ones to learn to cook, organize their space, do their laundry, and keep a well run home? What if they learn to stretch a dollar and to live with less? What if they learn to plan shopping trips and meals at home. What if they learn the value of eating together as a family and finding the good to share in the small delights of the everyday? What if they are the ones to place great value on our teachers and educational professionals, librarians, public servants and the previously invisible essential support workers like truck drivers, grocers, cashiers, custodians, logistics, and health care workers and their supporting staff, just to name a few of the millions taking care of us right now while we are sheltered in place? What if among these children, a great leader emerges who had the benefit of a slower pace and a simpler life to truly learn what really matters in this life? What if they are AHEAD?

Placements for student teaching will be delayed until we know how and when schools will resume. I will be in touch with a Google Form survey as soon as possible. It is important that we keep in touch and write journals to remember what our thoughts and feelings were at this historic time. This journal assignment is for you, the juniors, who are in a very different situation than the other undergraduates. Please email both Dr. Artzt and me your honest reflections. Although we are going to have junior group meetings on Tuesday, April 14, there are personal things you may not want to share in a group. Dear TIME 2000 Students, Given all the changes in your lives, I wanted to check in to see how you are doing. During this unusual time, it is important to stay connected with friends, colleagues - students and teachers, and, of course, family. I love reading your journals but that is only one way to stay connected. CUNY has created a web page that is extremely useful. In addition to listing specific date extensions for CUNY and QC deadlines, it includes a variety of tips, resources and tools. Be sure to scroll through the entire page. It is an excellent resource. Check out the new CUNY Continuity for Students webpage which features resources, tools and tips to help you transition to distance learning for the rest of the Spring 2020 semester.<http://maestro.cuny.edu/trk/click?ref=zqtbwp23f_2-1uc942a-0-1d84x37442x0RHw…> Other suggestions for staying connected come from an email I received from 1800Flowers. They make a lot of sense so I am sharing them with you. Develop A Plan for Staying in Touch: Jot down a list of people - even just three, four, or five - under the following headings: friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors. Develop a contact plan for the days and weeks ahead. It could be an aunt who lives alone, an older neighbor, or neighboring couple. Some you may want to contact every day or even every week. These need not be long conversations. Just reaching out is often enough. Make Use of New Technologies: Use the amazing new communication technologies available today - Zoom, FaceTime, Skype, Google Hangouts, etc. to create regular group conversations with your family or a specific group of friends. If you have folks in your circle who have never embraced platforms like these, do them a favor; call them and walk them through setting up. It will change their lives. Give Yourself a Break: Start a virtual book club over Skype or Zoom. Plan to watch the same comedy on Netflix with a friend. These moments of human contact - even if they're virtual - are even more important in times like these. Seeing a familiar face is comforting, even if it is on a device screen. Staying connected with others is one of the best things we can do for our well-being during these anxious times. As Jim says, "At the end of this period - and it will eventually end - you will emerge with more, deeper, and better relationships." Let's all stay connected and stay healthy! Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics (BEAM), a project of the Art of Problem Solving Initiative, Inc., is seeking undergraduate students or recent graduates to be counselors and teaching assistants for a summer program that gives everyone a chance to excel in mathematics. During summer 2020, we will run residential programs on college campuses in Upstate New York and Southern California, and day programs in New York City and Los Angeles. At both programs, you'll create a vibrant social experience for kids who are discovering for the first time that there are other people who like doing mathematics; you'll also be a TA for classes on topics such as number theory, combinatorics, problem solving, and computer science. At our residential program, counselors will also live with the students in the campus dorms. Be a role model and guide for students who are just beginning to set their educational path! Counselors must be strong mathematically, be reliable, and take initiative. They should be charismatic and able to help the kids have fun. Dear TIME 2000 Students, Happy December! As the semester winds down, we are busy planning events for the end of the year and for 2020! * Reminder: TIME 2000 seminar on Tuesday, December 10, 2019. * If you registered to attend the How to Make Math Conference at Molloy College on January 9, please send Lori your confirmation email if you have not yet done so. * If you signed up for the field trip to the Museum of the Moving Image scheduled for Friday, January 17, please check the list at the bottom of this email for your name. If your name is not listed but you would like to join us, please email me immediately to save your spot. A private workshop and guided tour are scheduled to start at 11am. Please arrive at the museum in Astoria by 10:50am and meet inside the group entrance door. See the attached document for a map which indicates the entrance for group visits and directions by public transportation and by car. Please note that street parking is metered and extremely limited in the area. Please also note that the visit does not include lunch. There are many restaurants nearby if you wish to plan an outing after the event with your TIME 2000 friends. See you at the seminar if not before! Dear TIME 2000 Students, As mentioned at the seminar last week, The How To Make Math Count Conference is a mathematics education conference for teachers of grades K-8. It is an optional conference ( i.e., not required); you are welcome to attend and TIME 2000 will pay your registration fee if you register by December 1, 2019. Please note that is at Molloy College in Rockville Centre and you must provide your own transportation. It is in January, during QC's winter break so you should not have classes here unless you are taking Winter Session classes.
