I teach Algebra at Hillside Arts and Letters Academy in Jamaica, Queens. We are holding our annual Portfolio Day on Friday, February 26, 2016 from 11:30-3:00. On Portfolio Day our students in grades 9 and 10 showcase their best work from the first semester to guests and parents we invite from the community. It is always a challenge to bring guests in since most people are working during this time period. I thought this would be an excellent opportunity for undergraduate education majors to see a real classroom in NYC, interact with our 9th and 10th graders in round table discussions where they talk about their classwork from the first semester, and see different projects from our project based learning curriculum in all subject areas. Last year we had the pleasure of having one of your undergraduate students attend our event and I know she enjoyed it! I emailed you last year about this and was hoping that you would pass this email along to your undergraduate students again and encourage them to RSVP and attend Friday, February 26th. I also encourage all secondary education students to participate, since students will be presenting projects from all subject areas. My principal is more than happy to sign off for observation or classroom hours that are needed for education classes or certification. I just ask that if a student RSVP's that they will attend they plan to come to the entire event from 11:30-3. A lunch and reception will be held from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm. I attached the formal invitation to the email which explains more about Portfolio Day. As a Queens student myself, I would be honored to have my fellow classmates as guests at Portfolio Day.
