In response, they offer the following description of how the scam works and how you can avoid becoming a victim. How the scam works: * A suspect approaches the victim as they're leaving their college campus, claiming they need help cashing a check to pay the Bursars Office their tuition. * Suspect and victim then go to a nearby bank where the victim deposits the check into an ATM and withdraws cash to give to the suspect. * The victim is notified the following business day that the check they deposited was fraudulent and they now have a negative balance in their bank account. How to protect yourself from check cashing scams: * If anyone approaches you while on campus or anywhere else asking you to cash a check, refuse and call 911. * Give the 911 operator a detailed description of the suspect and their location.
