Subject: Fwd: Queens College Mathematics Students Partner with Cents Ability

My name is Samantha Shlimbaum and I am a graduate from Queens College, Class of 2013. I currently work for Cents Ability- we are NYC based 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization that delivers education and engaging financial literacy workshops to high school students free of charge.

Estefania Heriera copied on this email is also a graduate from Queens College, she graduated with a Mathematics Secondary Education degree, and works for Flushing International High School. My nonprofit is accepting one of her current students as an intern.

She had informed me to reach out to you both in order to facilitate an event we are throwing at Queens College. We are seeking to make a Cents Ability Chapter at Queens College to connect current college students with high school teens, through our financial literacy program. As a volunteer they are trained to teach 45 minute modules on Goal Setting, Budgeting, Savings and Banking, Credit Cards and the Stock Market. We also have a class on college loans, for student to be understand the debt they are taking on, and finance options for college.

Financial literacy programming within high schools is very limited throughout the United States and there has been a push since the recession to better inform teens on money management skills. I was hoping you would be able to facilitate this flyer throughout your department, and possibly email your students information on our event.

This is a great opportunity for your future Mathmatics teachers to practice instructing in a classroom  alongside our trained volunteers from within the finance industry. Our partnership with QC will help in our outreach to high need schools in Southeast Queens. The event will be this coming Wednesday, February 10th during free hour in PH 130.

Look forward to hearing from you.
