We cordially invite faculty members whose first language
is other than English to participate in a panel entitled
“Beyond Grammar
Textbooks”: A Conversation about Experiential Teaching with Bilingual Faculty
Panel Chair:
Anahí Viladrich, Associate Professor at the
Department of Sociology at Queens College
Description
In the context of the Queens
Consortium on LOTE First Conference on Language Teaching (Queens College on
Friday, May 4th), we invite faculty members (whose first
language is other than English) to become active participants in a conversation
about their experiences teaching in English. Language rules and barriers are
dynamic and culturally-specific, as they involve not just the use of proper
grammar rules, but a deeper understanding of the (often tricky), utilization of
linguistic idioms and shared rules concerning body language. From homonyms that
differ in meaning depending on the context to misplaced jokes faculty members,
whose English is their second language, often struggle when trying to find the
“right words and tone” when teaching and advising students.
This panel offers an
opportunity to share the challenges along with the positive learning lessons
that faculty, from different disciplinary fields and countries of origin, have
drawn from their teaching experiences at the College level.
