Apprentice Museum Educator (AME) Program: Fall 2012 – Spring 2012
The Apprentice Museum Educator (AME) Program at the Rubin Museum of Art provides essential hands-on skills to university students preparing for future careers in arts or museum education. The unique exhibitions at the Rubin Museum of Art provide opportunities for Apprentices to learn and engage audiences through the interrelation of the art, geography, history, and culture of Himalayan Asia. Program participants will leave with an understanding of the inner workings of a museum education department, Himalayan art and culture, and necessary public interrelation and education skills that will prepare them for the future. Apprentices are prepared to utilize inquiry-based teaching strategies and receive weekly education on content and pedagogy. Apprentice duties include giving tours to incoming school groups, leading offsite pre-visit lessons at schools, assisting with art-making workshops for incoming school groups, and assisting with teen programs. Apprentices work closely with the Assistant Manager of Youth Development and receive mentorship by staff in the Education Department. The internship includes a monthly stipend.
To participate, students must:
· Be enrolled in an undergraduate program in a New York City College or University (Education majors or strong interest in a future career in art or education are encouraged to apply)
· Be able to provide services for two consecutive semesters (Fall and Spring)
· Work 15 hours per week (Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays)
