Do you ever find yourself asking the question: how do I get my students to watch this video I found on YouTube? Or I have these images, how do I put them on my course site? Or how do I put a video into my PowerPoint? In truth, multimedia is an important component of course materials and teaching tools these days. Becoming literate in the use of multimedia can open up many possibilities in your teaching. It certainly helps to know, not only how to make media available for students, but the principles behind the two main approaches to doing so: inserting media files, and embedding media files.

In this Tech Lite Talk we will discuss briefly what it means when people say they are “embedding” a video, image, or audio file into a document (e.g. web page, PowerPoint or Word file) as opposed to “inserting” a media file into a document. What are the implications of embedding? When does it make the most sense to insert rather than embed?

Then we will all engage in a series of hands-on exercises to practice the processes of embedding and inserting media files into a course site, a PowerPoint document and/or some medium of your choice.

This session is geared towards beginners.
