Chang(ing) Together: Exploring the Possibilities of Youth-Driven Research? in Teaching and Learning Tuesday May 9th, 2017 4:45-6:45 pm (Pizza served at 4:35 pm) 4:45-6:45 pm Dining Hall, Patio Room College Now and Cyphers for Justice youth from high schools around the city, along with CUNY preservice teachers, researchers, university professors, teaching artists and community activists, came together to co-develop and direct research projects that featured exploration of social issues including the impact of standardized testing, culturally relevant curriculum, and environmental justice. This interactive session will expose participants to Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) as a pedagogy, a methodology, and a critical epistemology that can be leveraged in educational contexts to promote powerful learning. Youth researchers, pre-service teachers, and teacher educators will discuss their experiences in a collaborative, youth-centered research initiative and offer suggestions for adapting YPAR in both informal and formal educational settings. Danielle Filipiak is a doctoral candidate in English Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her publications and research interests span the fields of critical adolescent literacies, teacher education, and digital literacies. Limarys Caraballo is an assistant professor of English Education at Queens College. Her research interests include the impact of youth research on teachers' curriculum and pedagogy. Dr. Caraballo directs the Complicated Conversations Series to encourage conversation among students, faculty, and staff in a diverse campus context.
