The Year of Brazil Speaker Series presents: Amidst Walls, Wired Fences and Armored Cars: A Participatory Ethnography of Soundscapes in a Post-Industrial Brazilian Context March 27 @ 3:00 pm - 4:20 pm Rosenthal Library, President's Conference Room #2 http://brazil.qc.cuny.edu/event/samuelaraujo/ Based on both his academic experience with participatory action-research on the favela soundscapes of Rio de Janeiro and as a public sector cultural administrator, Samuel Araújo will explore the perceptions of young people in Rio who fail to identify with canonical musical heritages and adopt instead internationalized forms (e.g., funk, rap, graffiti). Araújo argues that such disidentification permits citizens to defy established artistic and cultural canons in ways which expose the degradation of social life spurred by policies of isolation and extermination of the poor. -- Jorge Antonio Alves Assistant Professor of Political Science Queens College, City University of New York 65-30 Kissena Blvd. | Queens, NY 11367-1597 Tel: (718) 997-5414 | Fax: (718) 997-5492 http://qcpages.qc.edu/Political_Science/alves.html
