Generative AI: Two Virtual Workshops

The Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Leadership (CETLL) is pleased to invite you to two virtual workshops on Generative AI on Monday, November 13 and Monday, December 4. Both sessions will take place during free hour (12:15-1:30 p.m.) on Zoom. Dates: Monday, November 13 and Monday, December 4 Time: 12:15 pm - 1:30 pm Location: Zoom (the link will be sent to you after you submit the registration form) Register at https://forms.office.com/r/y404cjas7Q You are welcome to register for one or both workshops. Participation in the November workshop is not a prerequisite for the December workshop. Workshop 1, November 13. Generative AI and Chat GPT: an overview We’ll discuss the basics about Generative AI, including how it works and what it can and can’t do, as well as its impacts on teaching and learning, the possibilities that generative AI open up in the classroom, and concerns about academic integrity and ethics. You’ll have an opportunity to engage with ChatGPT or other generative AI technology. Workshop 2, December 4: Generative AI and ChatGPT In Our Classrooms This hands-on workshop is geared towards the implications of Generative AI in our teaching. There will be a brief overview of ChatGPT, examples of ways that QC faculty are responding to developments in Generative AI, including ChatGPT, and breakout discussion groups based on discipline. Dear Colleagues, The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) will be hosting its first Open House of the year on November 2, 2023 during the Free Hour (12.15-1.30pm) at Honors Hall, Room 17. We would appreciate if you could circulate the flyer and invitation letter for the event among the students in your class as well as among outstanding students with great academic potential that you think could be interested in pursuing a career in academia. The Mellon Mays Program supports outstanding undergraduate students from underrepresented backgrounds to apply for PhD Programs in the Humanities and the Social Sciences or students that show intent to pursue graduate work addressing issues of race, ethnicity, or gender. Applicants for the 2024-26 Class must be sophomores or lower juniors and have a GPA of 3.3 or above. Creating a Powerful STEM DEI Syllabus

On behalf of Nathalia Holtzman PhD, Associate Provost for Innovation and Student Success: Dear Faculty, We are pleased to invite you to attend a wonderful STEM syllabus workshop presented by Dr. Lissette Delgado-Cruzata right here on the Queens College Campus! Please join us on Thursday, November 2nd from 3:00pm-5:00pm for this valuable seminar and some light refreshments in the President's Lounge, Dining Hall. In this seminar, we will discuss the importance of considering diversity, inclusion and equity (DEI) practices in STEM disciplines and explore potential strategies to promote them in our classrooms. We will explore the use of a tool, the STEM DEI syllabi rubric, to assess DEI. This rubric is specifically tailored to syllabi in the physical and biological sciences. In our discussion, we will engage in a hands-on activity to examine the feasibility of its use, and its adaptability. The goal of the seminar is to include the suggestions of the STEM faculty participants in the current version of the rubric, to ultimately create a practical tool whose use can be easily implemented in any science classroom. She is an Associate Professor of Molecular Biology at John Jay College in the City University of New York and a Fulbright Scholar. Her research focuses on identifying the epigenetic patterns specific to US Latinas and Latin-American women with breast cancer centering on their genetic admixture. She is passionate about increasing the number of underrepresented minority students that go on to graduate programs, and mentors many undergraduates in her research lab. She also has a deep commitment to increasing diversity and inclusion in the teaching of STEM disciplines.
