Call for Presentations: Teaching & Learning Showcase, October 18, 2019

Celebrate fall and excellence in teaching at Queens College by sharing your practice at the Center for Teaching & Learning’s sixth annual teaching and learning showcase on Friday, October 18, 2019 from 10am to 3pm. The event will include presentations from faculty and students, on how QC faculty are utilizing engaging teaching practices and learning experiences. Consider presenting any teaching practice you have found to be effective and engaging. For those of you that participated in CTL workshops this past year, we would love to see a summary of how you are utilizing what you learned in your teaching. If you gave a presentation for the workshop you participated in, please consider giving the presentation to the wider campus audience. We encourage you to include your students in your presentation. This year we will host two types of presentations: Long format 20 minutes talks and rapid-fire talks of 5 minutes or less, including Q&A time. Rapid-fire talks are a chance to highlight a small and valuable teaching tip or practice you think others might find useful. Please send us a 100-150 word description of your practice or your students’ experience of it, and why you think it’s effective. The deadline for submission is Tuesday, October 1. Call for Participants: Strategies for Teaching Online: Developing Online and Hybrid Courses – Fall 2019

The Center for Teaching & Learning is offering an eight-week hybrid workshop on the development and implementation of online and hybrid courses (courses that blend online and face-to-face instruction). Faculty from all academic disciplines are invited to apply by completing this form: http://bit.ly/cfp-teach-online-fall-2019 **Please apply no later than September 25, 2019.** Selected participants will be notified by October 2, 2019. No experience teaching online is necessary, but space is limited so we will give priority to participants who will teach at least one hybrid or online course in winter/spring 2020 and/or summer/fall 2020. Call For Participation in a Faculty Book Club, Fall 2019

>From the Center for Teaching and Learning: The Faculty Book Club is an informal reading group for Queens College faculty members who are interested in reading about, thinking about, and discussing learning and teaching with colleagues across disciplines. Guided by facilitators from the Center for Teaching and Learning, book club members will read and discuss the book, "How Humans Learn: The Science and Stories Behind Effective College Teaching" by Joshua R. Eyler, which focuses on five themes: curiosity, sociality, emotion, authenticity, and failure. Meetings are scheduled for Wednesdays from 12:00 – 2:00 on the following dates: • September 18th • October 2nd • October 16th • November 6th • November 13th • December 4th The Center for Teaching and Learning will provide book club members with lunch and a copy of "How Humans Learn."
